Thanks Craig. A clean reinstall seems to be the way to go.

smart fella that I am, I first tried to install without automatic and when it didn’t happen I went the automatic update route, so chances are I have corrupted the update. I do seem to have the latest qt. How now to get back or forward to a normal situation and a usable fcp/qt? (oh yes to add to my cavalier behaviour, I have not actively done anything with timemachine.

I am in the same boat with one of two damaged cards (see thread before this one) The card that won’t mount showed 0 minutes in camera. After I did the latest firmware update it said it needed a media restore. Wow, I thought, but execute came back with a media error and no progress. Clipbrowser sees the unmounted disk if it is running when I insert the adaptor into my mac but it crashes when I try and do anything. Shopping around for some rescue software.

The news is not good. In fact it has gotten worse (if that is possible?) Returned to the scene of my crime (9 hours round trip) Shot using my two 8gb Sony cards in the rain and then the sun burst out and I was back to MxR with a different 16gb card (yes transcend, I have nothing else on hand) Gorgeous scenes of the lads giving it all climbing the hills of the lake district with me in the back of a 4×4. Card one said ready to change to next card. No, thought I, not going to allow that to muddy the waters. Stopped recording. Manually changed slots. Finished shooting. Little else to shoot. And guess what? The first card (of the last two) is recognised by nothing. Not the camera, not my powerbook, not my pc. (could I have switched slots before the light went green?) In the first go around (yesterday’s shoot) the card was recognised but the files corrupt. Tonight nada. I am going to cry then I am going to upgrade the firmware on my ex3 tonight and then tomorrow before I execute what is now a 12 hour round trip I am going to buy Sony SxS. I will sell a bunch of other kit to sponsor this – never again shooting a second on cheap alternatives! Lesson learned. And now having cried, is there anyone with advice about saving my material from the mess saving twopence has created?

  • Not a very professional solution but I shortened the clip manually by a couple of frames in xdcamtransfer and the clip was recognised.

Mike’s right about the viewfinder, especially for eyes over 50. The camera is truly a delight with that exceptional viewfinder. All the ergonomic woes easily solvable with not too expensive add ons. Also strongly suggest a strengthening plate like DM’s.

Got my “new” exchanged ex3 today. No issues so far. A thing of beauty. With the DM shoulder support and my old tiffen steadistick, I handheld for a couple of hours today with no, wrist, arm or back fatigue. The viewfinder is a mighty blessing. This old codger is a happy bunny.
