  • You can also hold option key while launching, this allows you to select a specific project or create a new empty library.
Also comes in handy if a corrupted library is crashing FCPX.

If you click on the actual color square (not the down arrow) in FCPX you get the OS X palette, which has it’s own color picker. What’s nice about that is you can add it to the preset palettes as well.

    WOW!
I never new about the popup, awesome!.
I think the timeline history is a session history, which is why I’ll first open up all timelines that I need to access.

If you are actually using a compound in a project (or multiple projects) then forcing you to delete the master project is a safety feature. It would be odd (and dangerous) if it wasn’t that way.

One thing you could do when you make a compound from a project is “break apart clip items” right away. The compound is created, but it’s not attached to the original project (in fact the project looks like nothin happened).

Once I got my head around keywords I found that I wasn’t using timelines to manage clips as much.

When I’m grabbing stuff from other timelines (compound clips or projects) I usually just open each timeline up one after the other. That stacks the timelines up in timeline history, then I use the timeline history arrows to hop between the timelines and copy/paste what I need. It’s usually no problem to copy entire sections (transitions and all) but sometimes it’s easier to grab more than I need and just delete the over-grab in the new timeline.

I used to use compounds for transporting sections between timelines, but i’ve found this to be quicker and cleaner.
    Hope this helps

I believe that 3D text only interacts with other 3d text in Z space.
When you see demo’s where they make 3D text appear through another layer, the base layer (what you want your .png to be) is actually 3D text (like a square or I) scaled or sized way up so that it occupies the entire screen. Since the base layer is actually 3D text, it interacts w/ the appearing 3d Text in Z space for the desired effect.

    Thank you Bob,
I appreciate the info. I’ll stick w/ the wall warts rather than experiment w/ the Kramer.
Those mini terenex’s look great. I notice a lot of the newer BMD gear is going w/ internal supplies, which is nice.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • There’s a percentage of any HD that you should leave available, I think it’s 20%. I have found performance to slow down when I fill up either my system or media drive above 80% or so. Exactly what you are describing (beach balls etc). Early on I killed a drive by running it at near capacity.
Also, you will see the best performance from thunderbolt drives if they are formatted raid 0 or 5.

[Daniel Zimmerman] “Sometimes, when I first place the background image beneath the keyed clip in FCPX, the composite looks great. But it soon goes back to the degraded look again.”

By this description, it almost seems like FCPX does it properly in real-time but messes up when it background renders the timeline. I’m wondering if by placing the Prores 4444 clip in first, it’s setting the timeline resolution incorrectly. You might try manually setting the timeline resolution first.

June 18, 2015 at 2:41 am in reply to: Multicam Color Correction Not Working

I’ve never had an issue with this before, however I haven’t done it since 10.2 so I just tested it out w/ some screen cap clips (pro-ress 422) that I had here on my home machine.
    Worked fine.
You might try it out the same way in a test library w/ prores-422 clips. If your using a camera codec and it works with prores then that might indicate a codec issue (or at least you can verify that you’re doing it right).

You do get the option to transcode media if you right-click a multicam clip in the event browser. That might be worth a shot as well.

A couple of other things. You might verify that background rendering is on (in fcpx preferences). Flushing the render files and letting them rebuild also helps with some of the weirder glitches.

As always, there is also the standard apple checklist found here.

    Side note:
One thing I just discovered in my quick tests now. Out of curiosity I created a compound clip, thew a generator in that and then tried to make that into a multicam clip. FCPX did not like that at all and I had to force quit.

  • You might try installing the play/view software from Sony’s support site.
I’ve updated FCPX in the past without updating the Sony XDCAM drivers(our format) and had similar results.
I’m not sure if the sony software “PlayMemories Home for Mac Version 2.3” will actually do any conversion or exporting, but there’s a chance that it will install the drivers that FCPX needs. It looks like it was updated recently.
Also, make sure you are running apples most recent pro video codecs.

    Apple Inc.
Apr 13, 2015 – Pro Video Formats 2.0.1. Download. This update includes support for the following professional video codecs: • Apple Intermediate Codec

I found the “Playmemories for home” software w/ a google search.
