I had that same error message when I first loaded Xpress Pro onto my desktop. I also had a RealTek soundcard. I spent like $30 on a simple Creative Soundblaster soundcard and the problem went away and it allowed me to boot up Avid. I’m not really sure if you could switch out a sound card on your laptop though.

I think you’re referring to “exponential scaling” under the keyframe assistance.

Yea, don’t take my post the wrong way. Trust me, I’m very anxious to learn that cartoon method. That keying idea was just something I’ve been thinking about for a while. I know there’s a great keying tutorial on here, and I’m pretty sure it deals with trying to key DV footage too. It’s just much easier for me to be able to understand and see how things are done with a video tutorial than trying to switch back and forth between reading and following along in AE.

Like I said, just a thought. I just know that out of all the video tutorials on here, you’re responsible for making most of them. If anyone else would like to tackle this task though, I’m sure many would be very appreciative of it. But I really do appreciate any of the tutorials I get.

I must say, I’m always amazed at your tutorials. Very well made and great ideas. I’m really looking forward to this one as it looks like it will yield some really cool results.

Just a question…have you ever thought about making a keying tutorial? I’m sure you haven’t but I just thought I’d put it in your mind 🙂 It just seems like a ton of people are always asking about different keying techniques on here. I thought maybe one of your awesome video tutorials would help to get people (me included) started. Maybe make it geared towards DV users as this is probably what a majority of novices that don’t know much about keying would be using to begin with.

Anyway, just a thought. Of course it’s easy to come up with these thoughts when I’m not the one that would have to put it together 🙂

Keep up the great work Aharon, I know everyone here appreciates it greatly.

Thanks everybody. Adolfo, Chris, Andrew, I very much appreciate you taking the time to spell this out for me. I understand now. Another thing to cram in my brain and hope it doesn’t push something else out 🙂

“In after effects it’s a little differn’t but similar in functionality for example when i add levels to a layer, then color key, then another color correction. It processes the effects in the order they are applied like would take place in a node tree.”

This is kind of where I’m confused. Isn’t AE doing the same thing? You put one effect on it, and then that resulting video then is used when the next effect is applied, and then that resulting video is used for the next effect, etc?

Or does it differ because you have to worry about transforms being applied before effects and things of that nature?

Thanks so much for your response.

So basically a node based application is just being able to have control over the render order?

What exactly do you mean when you refer to AE having a layer based interface? Are you referring to the layers in the timeline…or layers in terms of things being rendered in a specific order? If you’re referring to layers in the timeline, how do these node based applications interact? Wouldn’t they need some sort of “timeline” with multiple layers and things of that nature…or do they do things completely differently?

And lastly, why do people refer to masks in these other programs as being node based and being able to feather specific points? What does feathering specific points have to do with nodes?

Sorry if I’m sounding really stupid right now. I’m just one of those people that doesn’t like to understand something halfway. I feel the need to really get a grasp of it. Maybe you could give me an example of how a node based program would go about achieving some specific effect and how it is different from how AE would go about it.

Thanks again Adolfo and thanks to anybody that takes the time to walk me through this 🙂
