This is awesome! I saw this a while ago but had since forgotten about it.

I’d like to see more about the timing and synchronization that they use to create the video. As I think understand it, each frame from the video is actually from a separate pulse or “bullet of light”. It is timed so that in each consecutive frame, the next pulse has traveled a little further than in the previous frame. The result is then stitched together like a time lapse.

This being opposed to an actual 1,000,000,000,000 frames per second recording of one pulse of light. Even so, the fact that they were even able to do it at all is incredible. Regardless of the technique, it still blows my physics-hungry mind.

Press TTTT (the letter T, four times) to change to the “select all to the right” tool (or whatever it’s called). Click to the right of the clip that you need to extend, slide everything down, extend the clip as needed.

Check out the other variations of the select tool as well, T, TT and TTT. If you were getting clip colisions in attempt to move clips around, you may have inadvertently moved stuff out of sync somewhere down the timeline. If you didn’t undo after each failed attempt, you better check that everything is still exactally where you want it to be.

It’s either that or switch to the magnetic timeline :p

    *Edit
Oh, and you can ripple delete a gap without filling it with a slug first.

If you accidentally knocked tons of clips down the timeline out of sync, I reccomend restoring to a previous save. First, do a “Save As”, to backup your current edit, just in case. Add “oops ripple slip” or something to identify this version of your edit as the one that is messed up. Close the oops project and open the original. Select File> Restore project. Choose a backup project file that hasn’t been messed up yet. Select Yes to the “this project has been modified” warning.

Do you really need a broadcast monitor? Would a Matrox MXO2 Mini, and any HDMI TV work for you? While it isn’t a true broadcast monitor, the cost of this monitoring solution is well within your budget.

If by “the camera can take a certain number of photos”, you are referring to the expected lifespan of the shutter. No, I don’t think so. The “shutter” during video is electronic, offloading the image. Not physically opening and closing the shutter.

There is of course potential for increased wear on the electronics and circuitry. If your camera gets really hot while recording I would limits its use for video. But IMO it is rediculous to worry about whether or not using a cameras standard functions, in normal conditions, are wearing it out. IT’S A CAMERA! Use it up, make your investment in glass, by the time the camera wears out it will be long since antiquated and time for a newer better body anyway. Unless your talking about repeatedly recording for extended periods of time in extreme conditions.

Just my thoughts, not like I’m an expert on DSLRs lifespan. Don’t even own a DSLR but I’ve been shooting video for the majority of my life.

August 28, 2012 at 8:26 am in reply to: Compressor 4.0.4 stalls just before burn

I’ve had similar issues with compressor as well. I assume you are use ing job action to burn with compressor.

One time when Compressor hung at the burn process, I decided to do a test. First I noticed that the files did in fact complete, and were persent in Finder. Since I knew share monitor will restart a batch if the computer is shutdown while processing, I held the power button to force shutdown my Mac Pro. Once I rebooted, the batch started right where it left off, files already complete. The burn started immediately and completed successfully.

Definitely not a fix, just interesting that it worked

Another thing I’ve noticed is that if a job action hangs at the burn process and I cancel, reset background processing, reboot and try again just adding a number 2 to the end of my output file name (so not to overwrite the previous files that didn’t get burned because Compressor hung). Sometimes Share Monitor will say “copying destination file” instead of “processing frame xxx of xxx”. The “copy” only takes a couple minutes and then the burn starts. I started a thread about this here- https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/20/869267 no one has replied, I really wonder about this one.

August 28, 2012 at 5:04 am in reply to: Burning Blu Ray discs compatible with old-style PS3.

Try bringing the .mov export into Apple Compressor or Adobe media encoder and apply the default settings for Blu-ray. Then bring the resulting H.264 and .ac3 into Toast/Encore and burn your BD.

Basically three steps, create a self contained file from your edit, use that to compress the files for Blu-ray, then burn those files to disc. Hope that works for you.

Peter, are you working with compound clips in that project?

August 27, 2012 at 10:09 pm in reply to: New MacBook does not install Final Cut Pro 7

Cool, I didnt like X either, until Multicam and Monitoring came. Then I actually gave it a chance and got hooked. There are so many little things that can be frustrating until you figure out the way FCPX does it. Like moving the connection point on a connected clip, for example.

Just so you know, FCS won’t install if FCPX is in the applications folder. The fix is simply to temporarily put FCPX (motion 5 and compressor 4 too) into a subfolder within the applications folder, install FCS and update it, move FCS to a new folder in applications, and finally, put FCPX (M5 & C4 too) back into the root of Applications. If FCS is installed first, FCPX automatically moves FCS into a subfolderfor you.

As for the magnetic timeline, just press P to turn it off. Of course the Position tool doesn’t turn X into 7 but it helps. Now that I’ve got a good handle on how the magnetic timeline works, going back to FCP7 feels very dated and clunky and X is so smooth. While I’m pretty happy with X, I have (as well as everyone else) a long list of requested features, since you’re going to take the plunge why not send some requests to Apple? Link to feedback page is in the Final Cut Pro menu, “provide Final Cut Pro feedback”.

Here’s a few ideas for FCPX Feedback 😉

-Manual Save and versions history (ie autosave vault)

-Custom savable window layouts and keyboard shortcuts to switch layouts

-Change Keyframe interpolation in the inspector and video animation editor

-Keyframing for color correction and other effects

    -Zooming timeline centered on playhead

-freely zoom in and out of viewer

-multiple scopes open at same time

    -round tripping with Motion

-Ability to name clips from within the “Import from Camera” window, before importing. As in log and transfer from FCS

-Push notifications, when any process completes, to iPhone/Notification Center (OSX in general)

-The ability to Option+drag range selections in the timeline, in order to copy portions of clips without the need to make cuts in the clip.

-Used media indicators in event browser

    -Memory and cache preference

    -Match Frame/Reveal clip

    -Export range selection only

    -Prores LT export

    -A/V Sync indicators

-Add Gap clip to generators list

-A preference option to show/hide specific hard drives individually

    -Join through edits

    -Reconnect separated Audio

-Copy/Paste/Remove individual clip attributes & effects

-Select all clips forward/back from pointer (ie TTTT tool from FCP7)

    -Chapter markers

    -Export reference movie

    -Magic Trackpad support

-Duplicate Project with referenced media plus handles only

-A filter option for the event browser to show only Events related to current Project

-Allow Multicam clip to use “all active audio” instead of only audio angle 1 or audio angle 2 etc. So to use the audio as it has been mixed in the Angle Viewer.

    -A good Keyframe editor

-Preference to always export optimized or original, avoiding proxy if present

-Ability to eject hard drives while FCPX is running

-Audio enhancements should not start analyzing until an enhancement has been applied. Currently, just having the enhancements window open will start to analyze any clip that is selected.

-Background processing actually be in the background!

I have not, with many hours of recording since updating. Why don’t you do a test record and see if it is in the recording?

Also, if your using SDI, check that the pins in the cameras SDI out have not been spread apart. this happened on one of my Sony NX5’s, the signal would drop out and had me thinking I had a serious hardware problem.
