In terms of costs the dual xeon DDR4 ECC ram is prohibitively expensive at the moment and a non-ECC X99 system is much better value. BTW you can drop a Xeon into the X99’s socket and I don’t think it will require ECC ram.

I am interested to know how the new chipset performs.”Hard to say. it depends on your use. This is an office machine for running all my administrative software. Neverthless with an i7 5820 6/12 core 3.6GHz CPU and 16GB of 4 way DDR4 2133 ram (not overclocked though the ASRock MB is built for it) and running all my background software it’s it’s still 25% faster than my 2010 dual xeon 8/16 heavy iron system rendering out a Lightwave 3D scene ( non-GPU ) and 90% faster than the late 2013 MBP under Bootcamp – both with no other processes running.

Can you define that? :-)”
The simplest definition is by negation: I’m not on an Apple hardware cycle of waiting 3-4 years for a new generation of machines only to find that they may require a whole new investment in peripherals, be inadequate to my needs, and/or destructive to my wallet.

Sorry, no. It’s rather a big subject and I really don’t have the time being busy as I am installing all the variety of Windows software I use on a daily basis on a brand new X99 chipset screamer. Besides anyone who moves freely back and forth between different computer ecosystems understands what I mean: Apple makes simplified software interfaces by limiting initial choices. That doesn’t mean the software is necessarily less functional, once you dive beneath the surface. But the surface can be a matter of taste. FYI I have a late 2013 RMBP in my arsenal, a fine machine.

I know exactly what you mean, Charlie. If I had to work in FCPX all day I would feel like the Apple Way of Doing Things had drained every last breath of creative methodology from my very soul. 🙂 The interface alone would have had me comatose within hours. It’s great thing there’s choice in this wonderful world 🙂

As a somewaht sane person I use enterprise class drives. I have 10 3TB Seagate Constellation ES drives in a Raid 6. So far not a burp from the Areca controller.

I like the term “simplistic” over both so you’re right Mileage Does Vary. I’m not being confrontational here. I really disliked the interface. It felt designed for simplicity at the expense of functionality. I’m sure that’s only intended not to scare off new editors but it pushed all my “inelegance” buttons.

Correct me if I’m wrong but his 5.1 output is synthesized from a compound stereo clip? Sure seems so.
