We’re doing a 4k documentary with a lot of VFX sequences composed in Lightwave3D from a variety of different sources. As the color grade will be extremely important we wish to be able to quickly address different elements in each VFX shot in the grading suite (Baselight). From Lightwave we can quickly export a frame by frame color map of designated elements that will look someting like this.

We figured Baselight would be able to grab a good matte by keying a color but no such luck. It falls apart around the edges and at 4k that’s not much fun. The colorist would like either separate image layers within our EXR (very labour, render, and storage intensive) or separate mask layers. I’ve never studied expressions so therefore my question:

Is it possible to write an Ae expression to create a frame by frame mask layer for each color value in the map?

Thanks for any insights on this.

Does no one have an opinion on whether this is is at all possible? Or perhaps, if possible, would it be just too inefficient?
