September 15, 2009 at 9:35 pm in reply to: Media Composer to AfterEffects HD workflowI’ve done few of these now so I’ll offer a few observations in hopes it will help.
1- For some reason my AE (CS2) never interprets the fielding of Avid QT ref movies correctly. So number one I’d check the interpretation of video clips after you import them into AE.
2- Because of the time it takes to render HD I try to export my files as PNG sequences when possible. I import them into Avid as progressive with no problems.
3- Before you export your QT ref for DVD encoding, make sure you perform a video mixdown leaving no filler on the exported sequence. Also, I encode video and audio separately as elementary streams.
The above has cured DVD fielding issues for me when working with SD and HD Avid/Sorenson/Adobe Encore workflow.

It sounds like you’ve exceeded “safe pan speed” for your frame rate and focal length. I don’t believe there’s any “fixing” the problem as it’s the same artifacting that film shooters have had to shoot around (so to speak) for decades. Not sure which P2 camera you have, but if Barry Green’s “The HVX Book” came with it, there’s an excellent explanation for what you’re seeing and details on how to avoid/minimize it.

As always, try Avid’s official forums.

Unless Avid has fixed their codec’s nasty alpha channel edges you may want to use Animation codec. It would also negate the issue of making sure Avid’s codecs are on every box your project touches.

Thanks Grinner, I had just opened and resaved the PNG sequence from Photoshop when I read your reply. The animation codec was gonna be my next choice. After resaving from PS the Avid imported fine though. I’m on deadline so I’ll chalk the flakiness up to that.
BTW I wonder if Avid ever fixed the crappy alpha channel edges in their Meridien codec?

Agreed. I just completed an HVX200 HD project where I transcoded the media to DV25 so I could load all of it. From the DV25 I made subclips of my selects and transcoded the subclips to DNx145 and relinked to the DNx files. It worked flawlessly except for one clip that absolutely refused to relink and I had to transcode in its entirety.

Award-winning, well known agencies display their reels on the web by compressing them. Compression is a necessary evil, but MP4 and FLV files (even WMV) are the norm for internet streaming.
If you’re pinching pennies you can purchase QuickTime Pro for $30. You can open a QT ref movie in it and export to a few different codecs.

You can export an uncompressed QT movie easily enough after you mixdown all video layers. But you will never stream it over the Internet with typical broadband…. repeat… never. There are very good codecs for streaming. Investigate mp4 and VP6 for Flash FLV files.

True, but once you switch to display source in the timeline you can display the waveform there. I remapped the Esc key (no modifier) to toggle timeline display between source and record. Personally I don’t miss viewing/editing in the source window.

You should consider copying the entire folder structure to a suitable external media drive. Then you could delete from C Drive and try to relink to new media drive.
There is no MC lite, only Avid DV, Xpress Pro, and MC (and briefly FreeDV).
