Import the new file and replace the old file with it. That’s all the automatic you get since Avid creates its own (OMF or MXF) media from every file you import.

Based on the Samsons I’ve heard, I’d second that opinion. Don’t see any real reason to go with USB powered other than portability though. If music ends up being a bigger part of the mix, you may want to step up to something in the Samson Resolv line. I’ve not used them in studio but have heard them and I think they will do nicely for what you’re using them for. Planning to get a set of the Resolvs or Rubicons for my home studio as well. FWIW, monitor opinions run far and wide, with plenty of room for heated debate. But I think you’re looking in the right range and brand for your stated needs. If you live near a reasonably sized or brand name music store you should be able to audition a set.

Sorry, I left out a step.

“When I go to re-import the P2 clips, the system only lets me bring them in at their native HD resolution.”

Under the “format” tab in the project window, choose “30i” after you’ve imported the P2 clips you need. That will unlock the SD transcode options. You will not have to import the HD media. You can transcode from a virtual/linked drive.

“Secondly, when I do chose my dv25 sequence and then tell it to transcode to highest resolution, does it matter if the clip names are slightly different?”

No, it shouldn’t. In the relink settings choose: “relink by source timecode and tape”, “relink non-master offline clips to any online items”, “relink method: highest quality” (or whatever res you want to relink to).

“Lastly, you mentioned turning the SD/HD clip color on in the seq. hamburger but if I’m only working in sd (dv 25/50) what would this show me?”

Nothing, but when/if you switch back to HD for online, SD clips will be yellow in the sequence as a reminder that you need to relink to the HD media.

I just verified all this with a quick test of 180i transcoded (from a virtual drive) to DV25 and DV50. The sequence relinked to the DV50 just fine 🙂

A client of ours has had problems getting Avid DVD to recognize 16×9 ref movies using the One Step process. If you have Sorenson I would export a reference movie of the video track. In Avid’s export settings send it out at full (1920×1080) resolution and 16×9. Do your transcode in Sorenson (use one of the NTSC 16×9 presets) then import the resulting movie into Avid DVD.

Create a new bin. Re-import the needed P2 clips. Transcode to your chosen higher quality codec. Highlight your DV25 sequence. Right-click and choose “transcode”. In the “Video Parameters” choose “highest quality” and your clips should be replaced with the newly transcoded clips. It’s useful to turn your “SD/HD” clip color on in the sequence hamburger menu when working like this.

I’ve never ran Avid on Mac, so saying the platform wars are over may be a bit shortsighted. With that disclaimer, the platform wars are over 🙂 Consider your graphics, audio, and DVD authoring workflow first. Do you have thousands of dollars invested in software for one platform? Of course, there is Bootcamp for Mac to run Windows apps. Are you wedded to Adobe Encore for DVD authoring? Or DVD Studio? If you have a strong preference for one OS over the other factor that as well. And make sure you give HP’s new “Z” line a hard look before jumping.

  • Happy to help. It’s a shortcut I picked up from someone here at the COW.

  • If I understand correctly what you’re asking, highlight the clip(s) in segment mode and hit control+X. You don’t have to set in and out points that way. Be conscious of which segment mode you’re in (lift or extract) as extract will ripple the following tracks using this method.

  • I don’t know why your HD footage would look “horrible” in a 30i format timeline within an HD project. Make sure you’re viewing your sequence at full resolution; my Avid defaults to half resolution for HD projects.

But you asked how to “get the footage to SD” to edit. One workflow (at least with P2 which I shoot HD on) is to transcode the clips within the Avid. But you have to change the format of your HD project to 30i to get the SD transcode options. Not “export”, transcode.

Also Christine, understand that exporting as source will create an Avid codec (Meridien, DNxHD, whatever’s on your timeline) Quicktime. So if you’re moving the file to another computer for DVD encoding/authoring that computer will need to have the Avid Codecs installed to ope the file.
