Hi all, I have mac pro, have monitor, and now I need some advice on some reference monitors/speakers. I am extended already financially so I am looking at some entry level ones for right now. I also am not looking to get a mixer. I went to sam ash and the guy suggested some usb monitors from Samson. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I will only being doing basic work, small projects dealing mainly with dialogue, some show intros with music. I am not sure if if would be better to upgrade the sound card or not. Any advice in that direction is welcome too.

Based on the Samsons I’ve heard, I’d second that opinion. Don’t see any real reason to go with USB powered other than portability though. If music ends up being a bigger part of the mix, you may want to step up to something in the Samson Resolv line. I’ve not used them in studio but have heard them and I think they will do nicely for what you’re using them for. Planning to get a set of the Resolvs or Rubicons for my home studio as well. FWIW, monitor opinions run far and wide, with plenty of room for heated debate. But I think you’re looking in the right range and brand for your stated needs. If you live near a reasonably sized or brand name music store you should be able to audition a set.
