[Mark Crosby] “In regards to your item 3 I have read several places that ATI Crossover (SLI) is not supported under OS X in any way. Don’t buy two 4870’s for a single Mac Pro.

Sorry for being unclear; we’re putting one in each of two identical machines.

[Mark Crosby] I have read success stories of flashed 4870s in the 2006 MP, so if you go this route let us know your experience. I would like to ascertain the improvement of the 4870 vs. the stock 2600 in my 2008 MP.

Fortunately for me, flashed PC cards is not an option our IT people would ever support. Their experience falling for Apple’s marketing baloney on the original Intel’s GPU, the nvidia 7300 (we have four of the useless things in each machine, FOUR!), has made them clamp down on Mac cards.

[Mark Crosby] I saw you weighed in on a similar topic over on the Apple forum, recent posts there refer to news of the 5870 (supposedly) being out by the end of the year. Of course, the next best thing is always around the corner.”

No doubt the 5870 will be faster, bigger, cheaper, and come in a cooler color but I got money approved to spend today! The cards should arrive in a week or so. Ill try to psot notes about our experience in the relevant forums. On Apple, that will be FCP and Motion. I’ll start a new thread locally.

September 11, 2009 at 2:40 pm in reply to: Illustrator file for After Effects animation

[jeff openshaw] “I have an illustrator file created by an expert with many layers. “

Yeah, my experts are multilayered, too. I hate that.

Being an Illustrator expert is meaningless in the world of motion graphics. Being able to create art in AIL and send it to After Effects artists is a question of collaboration and research on behalf of the team. I prefer to blame my “experts” because, every time we start a new motion grphics project, I have to retrain them about grouping, naming conventions, canvas sizes, RB v. CMYK, PDF versions, and many other stupid details.

What Adobe needs is a simple “export this Illustrator file for After Effects” option.

    [Dustin Ward] “stupid”

Naw, just a simple difficulty with the complexity in After Effects. Thanks for closing the thread.

September 10, 2009 at 11:03 pm in reply to: How to make an animated graph?

3d in Keynote is all fake, isn’t it?
Motion 4 will give you lights and shadows and planes but it won’t extrude your surfaces. Search for Andy Neil’s Motion site for a tutorial on building cities in Motion, easily adapted to building bars and columns through which you can fly a camera.

Doing charts and graphs in a motion graphics editor like After Effect or Motion is tremendous fun but can make you nuts. Consider how you would do them in Keynote, you’d build or use a template. You want to do the same in Motion.

September 10, 2009 at 10:59 pm in reply to: FCP 7 – Improved render management?

Interesting thread but why isn’t there a simple way to tell what will and what will not require rerendering?

I still don’t understand why FCP isn’t smart enough to be able to know when something needs to be rerendered or just relinked. Even Media 100, way back in 1995, could figure that out. but it only understood two tracks of video.

See Apple’s marketing pages for the list of new stuff. It’s complete but definitive? It’s defined by Apple’s marketing department.

September 9, 2009 at 3:45 pm in reply to: 1 or 2 Graphics Cards? FCS & Motion performance?

FCP7 does indeed function properly with two or more cards in use.
However, Aperture and a few other Apple applications do not work well if more than one card is in use.

Clarify the term “in use.” You can have any number of cards in your Mac but for versions of FCP prior to 7, having monitors hooked to more than one card would disable most FxPlug filters that were installed with Motion 3.

Motion 3 would work successfully with any number of monitors hooked up to your Mac.

    I’ve never even opened Color.

There are many Motion experts who are perfectly happy with their GT 120 card for Motion.

September 9, 2009 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Has anyone with success used the ATI 4870 in

the discussion on the older Macintosh forums on apple.com indicates the flashed PC versions of several cards are in common use and the Mac version of the ATI 3870 and 4870 can, indeed, be installed in the early generation of Intels.

I’m testing a 3870 in my first generation Intel Macintosh today (if the tech has an opening for me to come by and play around).

    1. Will the Mac startup at all with the 3870 on board?
    2. Will Motion run any better than it does now (which is awful)?
    3. What kind of deal will they give me on two 4870s?

AFAICT, looks like three simple wipes to three precomped/rendered layers. Not even motion tracked, just position keyframed.

September 8, 2009 at 5:27 pm in reply to: 3000 hours of Beta SP, best way to capture?

Betacam cannot be captured faster than real time. Assuming you are using many more 30 minute cassettes than 180 minute units, including opening and closing the tape cases, cleaning the heads every now and then, and cassette eject and load, 3000 hours of footage will require 375 10-hour person days. That’s three years of regular work weeks.
consider also that merely having the footage online is useless if you don’t know what it is so cataloging your footage is just as critical as capturing it. That’s another 200-400 hours of excruciating clerical work.

This project will never get funded or, if it does, it will never be finished.
I’d take a really close look at the footage inventory before starting this project and dedicating all efforts to capturing the cherries first.
