Look for “Motion for After Effects Users.” Registration is eays, they’re all free and available anytime.
The project in this 30 minute video examined is remarkably lame but, at the end, the power of your Macintosh is finally revealed. Motion projects, in their native file format, can be imported directly into AE without rendering! Your Mac and GPU will process them in near real time into the AE space. You can even Open original and get live updates from Motion back into AE.
Oooh. Cool.
Regretably, the Apple seminar series is hopelessly out of date and the Motion stuff is silly; no creativity, just blahblahblah form someone who works on the application but apparently doesn’t really use it much.

Display issues like that are almost always related to the graphics card, not the OS and not the applications. Your problems appear at the moment to be related to the updates you ran but that may only be coincidence. While I’ve seen several issues with Apple’s latest OS update to 10.4.10, yours is unique.
It’s really impossible to tell from here what might be wrong, sorry, but reloading the application is likely a waste of time. Repairing permissions was not on your list of stuff you tried. Do that. You can safely trash the preference files for each of the applications (although you lose your presets and window layouts and some other personal settings). FCP does not use the same GPU resources as Motion and LiveType so I’d keep looking at the card as a culprit. I can’t tell you why DVDSP refuses to launch.
Spend your efforts on other likely causes. Visit the card mfr’s site for updates or maybe they have a user forum.Next to last resort: Try resetting the PMU for your Mac (research that carefully).
I hope you get better advice. Try searching and posting at apple.com’s forums for hardware and Mac OS10 issues. Please return to this thread (and any others you have started on the same topic) to tell us what you did to solve your problem. It will help future seekers.

It was repeatable on both of my AE installs. I just opened up AE and tried Colorama. The never-very-accurate Apple rumor mills have the tired Cinema display series being revamped or replaced or enjoying a significant price break in the next 2-12 months. If the 30 incher ever hits $1,200, I'm all over it. bogiesan

Dunno for sure but try hunting down and trashing the thumbnail cache. That red screen is in that file. Trashing the file sometimes forces FCP to rebuild the thumbnails and all the red screens get replaced with new references.
Hope you get better advice, too.

You could have saved us all a bunch of trouble if you had included some of these details in your original post. Since you have FCP, you also have DVDSP. Since you don’t have DVDSP, you’re running a very old or very suspect version of FCP, neither situation helps us help you.
MPEG2 is the DVD spec but all you had to do was open up FCP’s online help and look for iDVD or open the iDVD help system to find that you cannot import MPEG2 into iDVD.
FCP is a huge application and it comes with 3000 pages of manuals. Read those manuals.
