I have a client that insists on using Motion. Being an AE person, I find Motion very challenging and the performance is trying my patience.

Are there any objective third party reviews on the web, preferably from an AE artists perspective? (would you like to comment on your experiene with Motion having come from an AE experience?)

Also, where are all the third party templates, besides SugarFx and Peter Wiggins. Any really advanced stuff out there like, say, Flash has? Is Motion being used much for advanced broadcast production?

    thanks, td

    TD,

More stuff coming really soon. Trust me, they take time to get right 🙂

Motion is a good complement to After Effects. I’ve been using After Effects since it was called “CoSa” (before Adobe got it) and I love the ease for which I can create particles and true 3D particles in Motion.

I also love how easily Motion animates text.

I do some light compositing in Motion and thought I was going to do more compositing with the 3D camera now in Motion, but I still like AE much more for my primary compositing.

Motion doesn’t replace AE at all, at least in my view. AE is still the better hard core compositing tool, but Motion does some things easier / better. So I use them both to make my life easier.

See this page of Apple online seminars.

    https://www.seminars.apple.com/sol/us_en/?locs=us_en

Look for “Motion for After Effects Users.” Registration is eays, they’re all free and available anytime.

The project in this 30 minute video examined is remarkably lame but, at the end, the power of your Macintosh is finally revealed. Motion projects, in their native file format, can be imported directly into AE without rendering! Your Mac and GPU will process them in near real time into the AE space. You can even Open original and get live updates from Motion back into AE.

    Oooh. Cool.

Regretably, the Apple seminar series is hopelessly out of date and the Motion stuff is silly; no creativity, just blahblahblah form someone who works on the application but apparently doesn’t really use it much.

I have to agree that I’m still disappointed in the performance of Motion (still using 2.1.x) though I’ve never really used AE. I’ve used Motion on 3 completely different machines – 2 G5s with Radeon 800XTs and my Quad Core Mac Pro with the x1900xt – and Motion is achingly slow on all of them. Mine does perform the best, but it’s still super slow, even when doing broadcast SD work. But when I get down to it, I attribute this to my young age, and impatience born out of being a product of an increasingly impatient group of youngins more than the program itself. After all, I’ve not been doing this long enough to really appreciate the increase in speed that Motion now has.
