I’m with Woods. Figuring out how to do this isn’t that tough but it’s not easy the first few times you try it.
almost impossible to explain in a little posty but I’ll try. If you imagine one of your layers is one paddle on the rim of the wheel, you just move the anchor point off the edge of the layer till the anchor point lines up where the axle of your paddle wheel is going to be. Now when you apply a rotation (or orientation) setting, your layer will be positioned relative to the anchor point.

Precomp the whole thing and now you can rotate the wheel in 3d space all at once. I’ve done this often to simulate slides in an old fashioned Carousel tray.

I think the first thing to try is trashing your FCP prefs, the .plist file.

and its big brother, Card Dance, gives you a 3D setting that is controllable by using grayscale images or movies.

These are absurdly sophisticated effects created by Brian Maffit.

Are you using a sign system for playback?
If so, you may not even need to slice it up, let the signage system’s scalar do the job form the huge master file.

September 25, 2008 at 5:43 pm in reply to: ‘Attracted to’ question

There are subtle limitations to the type of objects you can use for attractors. See the maul for that.
You’re using an image well, Motion’s catchall repository for layer and object references. I searched the Motion manual for IMAGE WELL and got these out of 65 hits:

Allows you to drag an object (usually a clip, still
image, or shape) to provide input data for a
type of effect. For example, a bump map filter
needs an image to provide the bumps, or a
Repel From behavior needs to know what
object from which to move away. An example
of an Image well is the Attracted To behavior’s
    Object parameter.

Important: Several Simulation behavior parameters contain object wells into which
target objects used as attractors, repellers, orbiters, and so on, are dragged. Dragging
an object to a well may be tricky—be sure to click the object name in the Layers tab
and immediately drag the object to the object well (without releasing the mouse
button). The behavior must remain active even though you are dragging another
object in the Layers tab. If you click the object in the Layers tab and release the mouse
button, that object becomes selected, and the behavior’s parameters are no longer
displayed. This behavior is true of all wells, including mask source and image wells.

You must create a text clip that will be burned into the media and the render will create new media.

Search the forums for FlipCam, we’ve been getting posts like this for a year or so. You can also search for “converting AVI to QT.”
Best advice, since FCP is a Quicktime product, is to convert those lousy AVIs to a useful QT format. You may need a PC to do that but we hear that VisualHub can do it for you, shareware, about $50.

There are many quirks in FCP.
99% of all “text looks bad” posts are simple user errors requiring only that you view your fully rendered footage on the intended monitor and not on the computer display.

September 23, 2008 at 2:22 pm in reply to: After effects 7 – Missing effects

If you are running CS3 many effects from AE7 may not have come across.
If you are running AE7 and the project was from AE6.5, the same thing can happen.
If you are running AE7 for Mac and the project came from a PC, some effects may not track.
“glow” is a common title for tons of effects form third parties (but they are usually prefaced with the developer’s initials such as CC or CE) so the previous user might have used any of dozens of glow effects.

Tell us more about the original project’s source, might help someone else make some suggestions or guesses.

but you might as well start considering how you’re going to rebuild the project form scratch if you have more than, say, three or four complex effects that have not come across.

Well, I googled AIRPLAY and that’s what Google came up with: Billboard.
There are monitoring, air check, and airplay certification services that are advertising in Billboard magazine.
