Thanks for the suggestion Jon, I’ll try the track matte today. I learned the basics of Premiere a while ago, but I’m sure I’ll figure that one out right quick.

Thanks guys for re-assuring me I’m not losing my mind! In the examples we’re watching, the instructor drags the crop region around different parts of the scene to look at scopes for color grading, so, he may drag to a region to check a grey card, then drag to a face to check skin tones, drag to another face to check discrepancies between tones, etc. I could see that it would be useful for this, but I’ll just have to manually move the handles. It’s definitely a more tedious process that way though. Will do a request. Thanks again!

Sorry for the double post, I’m still in moderation (how long does that take to come out of?) so if I try and make a second post it modifies or addends the first post.

So, my results with the same technique are shown in the video below. I’m definitely interested to find out if this is perhaps a quirky thing of pc/mac. Regardless, it would be helpful and interesting to get to the bottom of this.

Hi Jon,

Thakns for the video demo. My problem is, when I drag the inside of the crop area, it drags the clip to which the crop is applied, rather than dragging the crop area region. If I lock the clip, then the effect is not selectable either.

Hi Jon,

If I lock the clip, then the effect is not selectable either. I’m wondering if this is a mac/pc thing. Are you using a PC to do this demonstration? I’ve noticed a few things in the video course that we’re viewing that are pc options that aren’t available in the mac version of premiere pro, or at least some of the effects/plug-ins.

Thanks for the suggestion Jon. I click on the crop effect name, and then I can drag each of the crop handles one at a time, to resize and move the region by each handle. He’s dragging the entire crop region as one unit, so its size/ratio is unchanging. So he’s dragging the fixed size crop window around the scene to reveal different aspects of the frame, such as a face or a gray card. so he’s grabbing and dragging the crop region around the window as a whole, rather then one point at a time.
