Since I posted originally I’ve learned that if the 1394 Firewire card has the TI chipset, it will work but if it has a non-TI chip set, it may or may not (probably not).

Turns out I did have a second card with the TI chip set and it works just fine with Windows 7 and Vegas 10, 64-bit but the built-in firewire interface on my PC will not capture.

Has anyone tried the upgrade or even a clean install, of the 64-bit version of Vegas 10.0b, on 64-bit Windows 7?

For me, either with upgrade from 10.0a to 10.0b or a complete, clean install of 10.0b after following Sony’s instructions to the letter, the program crashes at the point in the startup phase where it tries to create its windows. I had to roll back to 10.0a and at this point cannot run 10.0b.

I have an open case with Sony but haven’t heard back yet, and wondered if anyone else had had any trouble with their upgrade?

“Variable Bit Rate” – on the Video tab, to get 12 MBPS you will have to change the Output Type to ATSC and then tweak the Variable Bit Rate at the bottom to 12,000,000 (you can enter any values there). However, I have a gut feeling the default values that appear, which are larger, would suffice. Perhaps they are specifying “minimum specs”?

Might be worth a Google search of ATSC to read more about this standard. One such search revealed this article:

Jack, that looks like the specs for DVD Architect NTSC video stream (a standard Vegas render setting).

When you select that one, look at the video tab of the MainConcept MPEG-2 that comes up for that choice.

Then click Audio and you can change the audio settings to match the spec.

If you look at the advanced video tab you can see the various frames included by default.

The Vegas online help is very extensive and should help you confirm all this.

Windows 7 64-bit IEEE 1394 capture preview with Vegas 9.0c 64-bit is completely fixed.

Microsoft fixed the 1394 driver and Vegas is able to preview correctly during a capture.

November 3, 2009 at 5:48 am in reply to: Vegas Pro 9: 32bit vs 64bit?

I have found that 64-bit Vegas Pro 9.0c, if you consider it 1x render speed as a benchmark, compares favorably in performance to 32-bit Vegas at 1.2x to 1.5x, both running on a quad core 64-bit AMD CPU (separate partitions in a dual-boot 2-drive system).

XP 32-bit, by contrast, with the same version is 5x or greater for the same project.

For BluRay rendering 64-bit quad core with 4 GB RAM or more (my box has 6 GB) is the only way to go, and while you still have available CPU when rendering to do other things with such a config, the BluRay render time is very long indeed (10x or more compared to DVD on the same box, same configuration, same project) for a given length of footage.

  • When I was having this problem and contacted Sony Support about it, here is what they said. I really didn’t like their solution but it was what it was…and it did work although I usually don’t dump all my files in the same folder as the .veg file – kind of defeats the purpose of having folders to organize things if Vegas has trouble locating files that are actually there.

“Try starting a new project in Vegas Pro 9.0 and importing your files. Then go to File > Save As and check the box that says, ‘copy media with project’. When you do this, all of the media used in your project will be copied to the same folder that the main project file is saved to. This should allow you to avoid any subsequent issues with missing files.”

“Putting a check in the ‘Copy Media with Project’ box will create a copy of every piece of media used in your project and store it in the same folder as your .veg file. This way, when you open the .veg file later, the program should not have any issues re-opening each individual clip on the timeline”

I just got the BDR-203 and am very pleased with it, but I have discovered that I am unable to successfully burn DVD-R media of any brand that I have tried (3 or 4 different brands), with Sony DVD Architect 5.0a & this drive.

It gets about 4% into a nearly full 4.7 GB project (4.2-4.4 GB) and sits there….DVD Architect continues to spin up time to complete into the “many hours”, when on this machine it would normally take 10 minutes or less. I haven’t let it continue until something else happens though plan to as time permits – I end up aborting once the time to burn reaches about 10 hours.

No issue burning DVD+R DLs – they zip right through. I do also have an open bug report to Sony Creative about DVD Architect and BD-R discs with this drive – the speed drop-down reads top to bottom, 2.0x, 2.0x, 2.0x, and 2.0x (repeats 4 times). It should probably only show for the Verbatim BD-Rs I have as 2.0x and 4.0x, but if you choose the last 2 2.0x options, the burn quits (no error – just acts as if complete) only after burning the BluRay top menu. However, choosing the top 2.0x or next down with this media burns fine. No such luck with DVD-R. 🙁

One does wonder if these two issues point to a flaw in DVD Architect, but I have to say in the 4 years I’ve used several versions of it this is the first time I’ve ever personally encountered any such issues like these.

Does anyone have a contact at Pioneer who might be able to shed some light on this question?

This evening after I opened the Microsoft ticket I remembered that an old PC of mine had an add-on 3-port Firewire card.

I pulled that card, installed it into my new 64-bit Gateway, and booted. The O/S found the card and installed the driver.

I then attempted video capture of some HDV footage, both with Sony’s Picture Motion Browser (updated for 64-bit) and Sony Vegas Capture 8.1 for 64-bit.

In both cases, the software captured video and audio just fine (woo hoo!) but would not do a video preview.

Further, Sony Vegas’ HDV capture plug in behavior is strange.

When you click the Capture button, instead of locking in the ‘pressed’ mode, it returns to the ‘unpressed’ mode but the footage captures – without preview but with audio playing back.

Also, through out this whole time the camera’s controls – play, FF, Rew, pause – worked fine but the capture would fail after a few seconds.

This add-in card is a FireWave Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller, whereas the builtin Firewire is a non-branded OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller.

Somehow, that seems to have made the difference, or else installing a new 1394 controller somehow refreshed the driver in some way to make the interfaces start working.

In both cases the driver version is 6/21/2006, version # 6.0.6001.18000. When I drill down in Device Manager to the two 1394 devices, I notice some differences in the Details tab dropdown – some items do not exist in the ‘built-in’ 1394 controller, and in some cases what is there between the two show different, so this is a clue that the way the drivers and the devices are related are different from each other.

Still, even with the functional capture, the HD CAM does not show up in the Imaging Devices in Device Manager when the camera is in HDV mode for capture, so I have to presume this has something to do with why video preview does not work.

Perhaps you will find success with your 64-bit Vista and 64-bit VEGAS 8.1 with a true Texas Instruments 1394 Card. I got this one in a surplus bin for $20 awhile back (the only reason I remember that is because it was a bargain)
