  • Vista + Canon XH G1 = detect but no capture

Need some assistance with this one. When I plug the camera into the computer using firewire vista detects a video device and even asks me if I would like to capture using windows movie maker.

However, when it comes to the actual capturing, not only do I not see anything but the footage is not being captured. I have come to expect this with CS3 Premiere Pro and when I used a Sony A1U which vista detected off the bat, but now it seems as though the Canon XH G1 is just not being identified and to a greater extent not able to capture video.

I have visited the Canon website and saw no drivers etc. for the camera so I don’t know what to do at this time. I am at a loss.

    OS: Vista 64 Ultimate
    Camera: Canon XH G1
    Program: Premiere Pro CS3
    Computer Config: P9500 2.53 GHZ, 9800m GT, 4 GB DDR3 RAM

    Just a few basics;
First, Premiere’s Project settings must match the camera’s mode…DV or HDV.
Second, if HDV is set for both camera and Premiere, “Down convert” must be turned off in the camera.

Nope, nothing is being capture at all. When it does try to capture something the camera stops after a few seconds and the capturing halts.

The best I have done so far has been to allow the computer to indentify what camera it is. And I have followed your advice as listed above. However, the problem persists.

I temporaryily had the same problem with the A1U when I attempted to bring in DV footage but I made the A1U set to only DV import, I forgot the ‘auto’ function on these things aren’t so great 🙂

I will attempt the same thing with the Canon, but right now I’d rather let the footage capture from a reliable source. The Sony however, is not mine and will have to be returned by the end of next week. The canon, is mine and I would need this working 100%. I will keep you updated on my success.

Still problems. I try the Canon in windows xp and there are no problems. I have emailed canon to see what they have to say on the issue. If anything, I will attempt to create a partition for windows xp 64 bit.

I am on Vista 64. I did not have problem doing normal capture. However, I had the same problem a few times when trying to do a batch capture with XH-A1. I kept trying and it finally worked somehow.

I’m having the same problem with a Canon XH-A1 and using Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I can capture to windows movie maker in HDV and DV. But the camera doesn’t show up in device manager. Trying to use the Canon Console software. I had to install it in compatability mode and run it the same way for it to partially work. It will run the camera I.E fast Fwd, Rwd, play etc. But not capture anything.
I contacted canon about this issue and they told me at the moment the A1 and G1 are not supported for Vista at this time. If I plug directly into the firewire port on the ATI Radeon card. I can capture. But if I plug into the firewire port on the front. It locks it all up. I’m looking for some other sftware that may work too. I have Adobe Contribute. So figure trying out Premiere Pro should work. Same problem, software runs but says camera is not connected or needs resetting.
It would be nice after spending the amount of money for the camera that it would work the way I expected. No going back to XP to make it work for me. Without alot of extra work going back to what I had before I upgraded to Vista.
I’ll be looking around for some answers too.

This issue is not unique to any particular camera from what I can tell. It is likely a problem with Vista 64 and the IEEE 1394 Firewire native Windows driver. In the HDV mode a camera may be detected and controllable but the video signal through the Firewire interface is either not present or erratic. A more detailed description follows of my saga since getting the new system a couple months ago.

I have a 64-bit Vista Home Premium PC, a Sony HDR-HC9 HD camcorder and I use Sony Vegas Pro 8.1 64-bit edition.

The issue appears to be the video signal on the iLink/IEEE interface from the camera, as detected (not detected, actually, except intermittently) in the driver which ships with Windows Vista 64-bit. For example, Sony does not provide a separate Firewire driver itself, relying instead on the native Windows driver shipped with the O/S.

I have been working with Sony camera support for several months and just today they duplicated my configuration [they were a little slow on the uptake of my issue to try and replicate it] in their U.S. labs and found that they, too, could not capture HDV footage from a like model nor another HDV model of tape-based cameras.

I was playing around a bit with my software, with Windows Movie Maker 64-bit, and finally got some ERRATIC capture behavior, where in one case I was able to capture HDV footage but only if I manually started the camera and then engaged the Vegas HDV Capture utility. This all happened after I was able to successfully install the camera software that came with this model originally plus 2 vital updates which supposedly enabled full 64-bit support for Sony’s camera software, Picture Motion Browser. However, this software does not do anything definitive for the HDV capture though I have gotten conflicting reports as to whether the software updates themselves would impact video capture.

Alas, the HDV capture on 64-bit Vista only worked once and then I could not duplicate the steps to repeat a successful capture.

Sony suspects this to be the driver that is included in Vista 64, as I noted, and I have been putting pressure on them to put pressure on Microsoft to examine this problem. Canon should do the same.

There are postings all over the Internet about people having this problem but no real solutions…only blind luck. I know this: We are not alone in this problem.

If I come up with anything I’ll post back here, and if any of you would do the same, it will help all of us.

The advantages to video rendering in 64-bit Vista far outweigh any idea of rolling back to 32-bit Windows, where HDV capture on XP or Vista work perfectly. I have had to capture my HDV footage on 32-bit (old machine) and then transfer the files to the 64 bit machine for editing and final rendering. This costs 2x time compared to capture and edit (tape based camera), but is still better than capture and edit on pure 32-bit machines.

    Good luck!

I do have the Canon XH-A1 working with Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 now. But with Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit, not 64. Didn’t install the 64 bit. I have the disk for that version too. But decided to go with the 32 bit. I’ve thought about going the 64 bit route. Since it captures everything just fine the way it’s set up. For now I’ll stick with this setup. Maybe any little hick ups wil be fixed by a faster video card. Only using a P4 3.06 ghz 2.5 gig ram, 256 meg ATI Radeon X800 video card. For the moment “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is the way I’m going.

I had problem when first used Canon XH-A1 with Vista 64 bit – not had with Vista 32 on laptop. Scence detection recording do not count down although recording worked. Changed DV Device control in Pre-Pro to device, Unplugged camera shutdown PP CS3 plugged camera in and restarted PP capture worked fine!

    Hope this helps someone

Try use instead of its battery direct AC. It is working Avid
