I suggest that oucapture to an external drive FW 400 or 800, for starters. After you have captured, make sure just the drive is connected when you are editing.

It still shocks me a bit to know that there are people that do not really know that FCP systems are all over the world doing things as good as or even better than an AVID would.

I have been running cards and FCP since version 2 and I can tell you that the Kona is a very stable platform that will allow you to do all that you describe and more than you are used to.

You might as well add all of the J decks to your list along with the 1200A, D5, F-500 and any of the SR decks.

Very stable and I am sure you will find a lot of very satisfied customers who have build their businesses on FCP and Kona products.

Try cleaning the heads on your camera. Buy a cleaning cassette and run it. Are you using wet or dry tapes? or have you been using both? You should only use either wet or dry tapes in a camera, if you use both then you can create a clogged head problem.

The pixelation you discribe sounds like severe dropouts. This means there are sections of the tape when picture and sound were not recorded correctly, So how can the timecode be consistant?

FCP is now great at finding and identifing TC breaks. You can go and turn this off in your settings and then it will capture over these breaks but recaptures will be a bit of a problem.

I will second this.

Since the card uses a hardware downconverter in HD to SD mode I wonder how hard it would be to do the anamorphice squeeze in SD to SD mode. Presumably the processing power “exists on the card to do this, it’s just not in the driver.

Aurora video had a letterboxing feature on one of their cards that let you mask out tc and frame numbers from burned in rushes. that was handy too.

So, I’ll second the SD Anamorphic feature idea.

I am running the Kona 2 drivers with no issues. To me it seems that AJA tests their drivers well prior to release. I have never had a major issue after an upgrade.

Walter’s advice is great advice, and I would add that you might want to

1. repair permissions
2. use carbon copy clooner to clone your system drive (do this if you plan on restoring back to what you had)
3. Install new drivers
4. Repair permisions
