Depending on which DVCAM deck youhave you can absolutely record an analong signal out of the DVD player and into the deck.
Mpeg streamclip is your best bet.
if you do not have the Quicktime Mpeg 2 component you can buy it from apple for 29$. This lets you convert DVD VOB files into any codec you wish.

Why don’t you just dub your DVD’s to your DV Cam deck and then capture the tape and edit it. Are you dealing with copyright protected material on those DVD’s?

In Final Cut is reffered to as reveal in finder. I belive it is the Control or Option F key combo.

You are rightthere is good and bad about this. Here is what I like about the FCP way. The media file onthe disk and the clip that you ahve logged has exactly the same name. This is great when it comes time for deleting media or if you want to watch stuff with Quicktime rather than opeing up FCP. It is great when you are running multiple projects. I rarely name clips IE: (cu shot of hand, WS empty room etc.) because I can have that added as a comment later, but I find that being able to name clips by project tape and numver is so effective. IE; a clip for tape one of a film called LOVE would look like this.

LOVE_T001_03Project, tape number, clip number, eact sits in it’s own folder with the tape name. Then I can look at this at the root of the hard drive at any moment. As a rule I break clips when scenes change or the ten minute mark. so I know that I am ususally dealing with different scenes.
As simple and non discript as it seems, it actually allows any editor to step in and understand what is going on. It’s a standard.
Avid will let you name a clip anything but then it goes into their own complicated database (which is rock solid) but the media object files then carry names like MMEDOBJ00993928276646552.kjsusill.lkjjhy. This means that once you have captured any media you have to go through the AVid to make it usable.
I like the QT file structure because it make things simple and fast. For example, stills, AE renders, music and all of the things that are also media, are much easier to import and work with.

In your compressor setting try to make sure that your Constrain Display to 16×9 .
It is in the inspector window in the geometry section.

The timeine will always stop playing on the last frame so there really isn’t any wasted space, it’s just that way. If you right click on the top of the timeline you can view the timeline in frames instead of Timecode. This might help you if you want to make the spot 5 frames longer. You can also use non drop code to squeeze out the frames.
You can not alter the color of tracks.
There is no viewable TC window while digitizing and as a heads up, the usio meters do not engage while digitizing either.David

This could also be a faulty card. You should re-seat the card and make sure it is secured in the slot. If it persists, you should contact AJA and have them send you another board. They are fantastic about that, the customer service is excellent.
