    Bob Zelin,

Where are you on this one? 🙂

    Josh,

The F500 is a deck and interacts very much the same way a d-beta or beta sp deck would with FCP. You are just pumping it HD instead of SD. Plug in the HD-SDI video and deck control and you are off. Your posts seem deilberately vauge.

If you have HD footage on your drives then you know if your drives can play it back?

Who told you they would play back?

Is your KONA card a KONA 2 HD card?

Do you have a K-box attached?

With your expericence why would you think that running FCP off the hard drive is wrong?

I have a KONA 2 and a Pipe Studio Card in two different suites. Are you sure you have loaded and appropriate easy set-up. From what I see on the Kona LS, this feature should be working.

Call AJA too. They have unbelievable support and will have you up and running in no time.

    You can.

In the capture window in the Clips settings tab you can adjust Saturation, brightness and contrast while capturing compnent. Hue of you are capturing composite.

I leave these flat and use the 3way cc to correct everything in FCP. It is a far more accurate and powerful tool.

These adjustments are greyed out for digital streams (sdi, firewire)

This is also where you can open the capture scopes from.

    it’s all there.

  • This seems to be one of the cavates of working with HDV in the HDV codec. Maybe you can downconert to DV for the edit and apply effects and then only reconform the HDV master.

    Hi Gavin,

“I was certainly not recommending that anyone return their footage to DV50 or HDCam as it goes through stages of manipulation”

Not sure where I suggested this. it’s all cool man. HDV is not all that promising. It’s odd. it’s not really HD and not really SD and not that great an in between.

  • Michael,

Are you sure you are not setting off the render all command. I know it seems simple but it should not be trying to conform the whole timeline. It will on output though.

    Blake,

Some broadcasters (if you are going the broadcast route) actually will specify terranax as the acceptable upconvert of 720P footage. I have seen very clean results through my KONA 2 card since they have released new drivers.

The only thing I can say is test a small piece.

Test one: 720P online to Terranax 1080i
Test Two: 1080i Upconvert from Panny deck
Test three: 720P capture to KONA 2 Upconvert

Look at the results on a very large screen through a High quality digital projector if you can, that is where all of the blemishes will show (interlacing etc.

Tests are worth the money if you end up loosing a sale because of the process you choose.

    Stoke,

I agree with you. the footage is all compressed at the capture stage, but depending on how much manipulation you are doing it’s nice to work in an uncompressed format because it will hold up better with mulitple renders. All of this compression is designed to get an HD signal to tape (which is not at all easy to do without compression) and each manufactureer makes their own compromises/choices. Coming from Discreet, you know all of this.

So when shooting green screen you have many options, if you shoot Varicam you know that it is being compressed going to tape so the next logical step could be to keep it as prestine as possible from that point on. The DVCPRO HD coec does not respond as well as the Uncompressed codec when it comes to multigenerational performance, but it makes a ton of sense for aquisision. I am not saying there is any more information when you capture uncompressed, just that you can preserve what you have already given up when you shoot.

I just did some tests with HDV and I will be posting an article shortly on it. It’s not a chroma Key test but we did find some intersting things and you may be right, it might just be better to stay in the native codec and do everything in that codec with a firewire workflow, because it never gets better than it’s original compressed self.

  • This thread has been great one! There is obviously much concern about this and there will be more debate about how we will find solutions to storing stuff once it is shot.

I still have my iphoto library in three different places. Trying to convince some producers that having no tape is a great thing won’t be all that easy. I think that it will be hard to convice every client to buy a 60 gig portable panasonic drive.

    We’ll see.

    Sorry,

    I just re-read your post.

Are you getting video out of the K-BOX. Maybe the connection to the computer isn’t happening.
