I have a friend who has nick named it FCA for FINAL CUT AMATURE. Times like these is when we should be using the term FCA.
Also, very fun if you try to pronounce the acronym FCA as a word. 🙂

You can start with my HDV article as a primer.
If you use an andromedia Lanc converter and the sony deck it would be possible to capture the HDV to just about any codec you want if you use the component out of the deck and convert it to SDI with the AJA component to HD-SDI converter to get through the Kona into any codec you want with reliable TC recapture accuracy.

Here is another option.
Drop the 720P sequence into a 1920×1080 sequence, open it in the view and perform a 200% blowup.
Render the timeline and output that to tape.
QT is a pretty clean upconverter and in some recent tests with a film house the QT upconvert was very, very close to the captured footage.

The RT engine is dependant on the following, RAM, your Mac’s processing speed AND how many streams of data your hard drive system can push. You do not state your system configuration beyo your post, but I might suggest that the drive speed is what is limiting your real time performance.

This falls into the “TIMECODE IS MY LIFE” Category. There is no real way to get the results you want without hand syncing the audio, which if it was well logged at the time of capture will still be a task, but not an impossible one. You can capture each separately and then match the DAT to the video vlips gang them and create a relationship from that point on. NO TC on the DATs will not make this easy though.

I would recomend dispplay that has DVI inputs. THis is a nice way to get good clear images on your main display.

These kinds of questions can create havock on a thread. For a feature comparison of the two products you can most likely visit each web site.
One thing I can comment on is the excellent custome support that you receive with Kona products and a three year warranty.
I do not own a decklink product but I have used them. I also own and Aurora video systems Pipe Card.
The Kona has a few obvious features over the decklink but the main question is what your workflow will be.
