    Hi,

I have footage captured and edited in a 720p DVCPROHD 59.94 timeline and was wondering if the KONA2 has a setting to kick this out to HDCAM tape.

    Thanks,
    Craig

The Kona 2 will not cross convert to 1080i BUT if you have a 1200A deck you can send your 720p out to 1080i. There are other methods as well.

    Hope this helps.

OK, so without the DVCPROHD deck or resizing in an HDCAM timeline this CANNOT be done????

PS. Thanks for the quick response….

Not by the simple “flip of a switch” on the Kona 2. The Kona 2 will not cross convert 720p to 1080i. You can do it in various software configurations, you can use a terranex, you can use a dvcproHD deck, and I’m not sure if you can do it on an HDCam deck.

Check out algolith software, you can license it for a week for $59.00. It does a pretty stellar job, but takes loads of time.

We do this one of two ways.

Take my mobile Kona 2 system to a local facility that has a Terranex converter and feed my HD-SDI out to the converter and make the 720 – 1080i cross convert.

Or we simply master out 720p to a DVCPro HD tape and then take that to the facility for the cross convert to 1080i.

The 1200A also does a fantastic job of the cross convert as well. Simply play straight out of the 1200A into an HDCAM deck. You can also use this feature when digitizing to simply edit in 1080i all the way through the post process.

    The Kona 2 itself cannot do a 720 – 1080i cross convert.

    Here is another option.

Drop the 720P sequence into a 1920×1080 sequence, open it in the view and perform a 200% blowup.

Render the timeline and output that to tape.

QT is a pretty clean upconverter and in some recent tests with a film house the QT upconvert was very, very close to the captured footage.

Really? Wow, I would absolutely NEVER believe that would look good.

I disagree, rendering 720p in a 1080 tiimeline looks jittery, unacceptable. Easiest solution is to use the 1200A deck which is fine but KONA2 should do the cross convert, I believe decklink does.

If you are talking about 1080P then it might be the increased resolution of the monitor that appears jittery. I fing that the 1080P 24 frame stuf has a specific fequency flicker that differs greatly from 720P.

If you are going to 1080i (itelaced, then I agree with you.
