When you initially recued the tape did you use the “END SEARCH” button on the DVX. This would have cued to the very last frame on the tape. If i do continue on a tape after reloading it then I always take the time to recue with this feature.
The only thing I can think of is that you did not do this and the footage is somewhere a few seconds past where you thought it might have started recording.
It seems strange. The only other thing is that the tape was fully rewound and then it was recorded over. OR maybe you had the record tab in and it never recorded the second shoot.
Take a deep breath and think things through.

there are many variables to your post.
1. Drive speed. If you are on firewire drives you can expect a render.
2. RT settings (safe or unlimited)
3. Size and resolution of the images (anything over 150dpi is overkill.
4. Computer speed
5. FCP version.
6. FCP sequence render settings
7. FCP motion quality (v5.0 only)all of these variables contribute to render times.

This is a very interesting approach. Many of the sound recordists I have worked with have wanted the peaks to be just around hitting only the firat red. The common thing is to set the tones at about -18 db or three dots below the first red peak.
I know that the DVX’s audio recording capability is comprable to the best DAT recorders but the arguement has always been the Digital sources need more headroom than analog because clipping is so much more pronounced in Digital recordings.
Interesting to see that it can be ridden much “hotter” than I have in the past.

Final Touch is dedicated grading software, but I would recomend setting up a system because it is hardware dependent (video card) but it costs less than AE + CF and it wil be faster in the long run.

You might want to consider silicon color’s Final Touch SD. It is a very powerful program that was developed closely with Apple.
It works in RT with your graphics card as well and has excellent XML support between programs.
