Here’s my dilemma: I have owned a Sony DSR-45 DVCAM VTR for a few years now and I purchased the Panasonic DVX-100 last June. With this combination, what tape stock are people using? I understand the whole wet/dry lube issue and the need to use one stock faithfully. Did you remain true to Panasonic and use their stock for the camera? If so, have you had any trouble playing the Panasonic tape in the Sony VTR?

I chose the other route and used only Sony tape in both the camera and the VTR. I have had no problems until now when someone accidentally used the Panasonic tape. So my question is: Am I better off using the Panasonic tape because the Sony VTR is more forgiving with tape stock? I understand Panasonic’s take on this and so maybe this is my lesson learned.

Please share any of your experiences.

I’ve had good luck with the Panny tape. Bottom line is worse thing is to keep switching back and forth.

I agree with Noah. I’ve used the DVX cameras for 3 years and had good luck using the Panasonic tape with my camera and Sony deck.

In my experience the Panny tape has been excellent.

    david and others,

i ‘m hoping your simialr problem with tape compatibility may shed some light on my big problem…(i also posted this as a separate post but not sure if you’ll see it)…trying to cover all my bases before i pull out (the rest) of my hair:
    —————-
ok, i’m pulling my hair out here…

a few weeks ago, i recorded 18 minutes of footage (sp mode) on my dvx100a on a panasonic dvm63 tape. yesterday, i put that same tape back in my dvx100a, made sure that i recorded over the last few seconds of existing footage (to avoid a break in timecode). I recorded approximately another 20 minutes of footage.

Today, when i tried to review the footage… I put the tape in my dvx100a, rewound tape to the 18 minute starting point of that new footage and there was NOTHING: timecode stopped at old footage and just a blue screen.

So, I immediately got out head cleaner…same problem. I ffwd through the whole tape and when I get to approx. 40 minutes…there’s the last few shots i took…. so… for some unknown reason, i’m missing about 20 minutes of really, really important footage and then the broll, exterior footage shows up.

important additional info: last night, I first tried to view the tape on an old external minidv deck (sony gvd300) that has recently had trouble “reading” the new panasonic tapes… i FFWD and Rewound the tapes in that machine)

I’m fearing that when i did that ffwd and rewinding in that external deck, it somehow screwed with the data that was on the tape and it’s lost for good??!!

HELP?! is there any tips for making this footage reappear! the footage is for client that is expecting a finished project in 2 weeks! argh!

    Tom,

When you initially recued the tape did you use the “END SEARCH” button on the DVX. This would have cued to the very last frame on the tape. If i do continue on a tape after reloading it then I always take the time to recue with this feature.

The only thing I can think of is that you did not do this and the footage is somewhere a few seconds past where you thought it might have started recording.

It seems strange. The only other thing is that the tape was fully rewound and then it was recorded over. OR maybe you had the record tab in and it never recorded the second shoot.

Take a deep breath and think things through.
