April 26, 2013 at 12:19 pm in reply to: avoid Nvidia beta drivers 320.00 with 6XX GPUsalso forgot to mention the built-in video encoder/decoder in 6XX hardware, actual silicon devoted to video processing not present in other cards… it’s a shame only a couple of companies are using it since it is mighty quick with minimal GPU resources as it is a separate hardware on the Kepler GPU die, if Sony was to optimize Vegas for this separate encoder while using the CUDA cores for rendering acceleration at the same time… I guess performance would be past ahead of some Quadro cards, that’s why FP32 is crippled and Software Development Kits for this Kepler feature(NVENC) are only handed to a bunch of game companies but no professional who could use it “against” the Quadro cards.
it’s like carrying around a ton of toys and telling kids they can’t play with them, 6XX Kepler mainstream cards have interesting and powerful features for video editors that will remain untapped and forgotten since some Nvidia executive decided they were too good (and too cheap).

April 26, 2013 at 11:17 am in reply to: avoid Nvidia beta drivers 320.00 with 6XX GPUsJohn, the 7XX series are 6XX Kepler cards at heart (based on the same iterations of the GPU core) with improved memory bus and a bit more shaders and CUDA cores… they are pushing computing performance to try and catch AMD by adding full FP32 performance back to the intentionally “crippled” GK104 GPU, the architecture is not much different from Kepler, only refined and without “rough edges” (sorry don’t know how to say it in English) so no more weird 192 Bit memory bus for 770 Ti, a traditional 256 Bit is the minimum with 384 for GTX 780 at the same price if not a bit cheaper than currents 6XX cards…
so those contemplating upgrades might wait a couple of months, for the same price of a 660 Ti you can get a 770 with much more horsepower and non-crippled computing performance for professional use.

build 121205 ?
the IT guys at my workplace installed build 130145, it hasn’t crashed once in a long, long time and it sure pushes the hardware.

April 26, 2013 at 4:56 am in reply to: Serious Question – Is Build 563 Ready for Prime Time?the only issue I have with the excellent 563 build is that from time to time the plugin “Film Effects” from NewBlue (v130227) crashes for some random reason I don’t understand, I tried different GPUs, CPUs, whatever, I think it’s just buggy. So no complains about 1st party issues, Pro 12 v563 is a solid build.

excuse my ignorance, does this extension use some kind of GPU acceleration for rendering or just relies on the basics provided by the host ? we use some third party plugin at my workplace to streamline photo montages but I’m impressed with John’s work, might try to convince the IT guys but it will be hard (“if it ain’t broken…”)

Good advice John, I’m so obsessed with updates and drivers to the point I sit them out for weeks until I fully understand what they fix and what they break, this at home of course, at my workplace we do full system backups every week and project backups every hour (the back-up software running in the background unnoticed to video editors, our IT guys are awesome).

funny that at first it was a recommended update and thus installed automatically when that option was enabled… the following day after the flood of negative feedback they moved the IE10 update / KB2670838 to “optional” updates… but they already got the “virus” spread on thousands, millions of computers running Windows 7 and having “puzzling” issues…
in a fair and just world there should be a compulsory update to remove that KB2670838/IE10 and warn users about it upon reboot of the OS, then again Microsoft will never shoot themselves on the foot… same as Nvidia never said Kepler cards were not backwards compatible with previous CUDA software, for sure the Redmond guys want to sell Windows 8 around but I’d never recommend it for professionals, too bloated, no start button, no proper desktop, made for touch-screens, 64 Bit software with mature drivers on Windows 7 runs better specially for editing… this is, use a Mac !

just Google KB2670838 and DirectX issues, it really can mess with your system depending on your hardware-software-drivers config.

good to hear, you know 2-pass renders for professional edits are a must in my book even if the difference is negligible in most cases, there’s always that random split-second pixelation and/or dithering 2-pass can actually fix.

just by chance… have you updated your system with Windows 7 update KB2670838 ? (Internet Explorer 10 update) if so, uninstall it and hide it from automatic updating before installing Vegas.
