Well i really don’t know what’s up. I left it over night processing a delete, and when i came back to continue this morning they started going faster, a lot faster. i got excited and then after maybe 6-7 events deleted they started chugging again. I’m not sure if this matters but i had a second library from the same drive open at the same time (although i did try this process with only one library open and it was the same). One event i came across I moved to that second library via right click and it went super slow too. So maybe not just a delete issue. After several hours I ended up finishing the task of culling the events from that library and eventually deleted it entirely once the events were moved out to other libraries or deleted themselves.

Out of curiosity i ran disk first aid, all green lights. I ran AJA disk speed… the USB disk reported 250mb/s …. my mbp ssd reported 2600mb/s. Does the fact that its exfat formatted make a difference?

ps. the second library a have on that USB disk is 3.5TB with 3000 clips…. and it responds quite quick. Possibly the first fcp library with the slow deletes was buggered under the hood.

Welp, i used fcs remover and then did a fresh reinstall. Same result.

I’m starting to think this is normal. The clips in the Event/Library are on the USB drive. Why? Because they’re huge. When an Event is deleted in FCP, it goes to the trash. Where is the trash? On the laptop. The status of each of these deletes processes under Background Tasks > Media Management literally says, “Move Event to Trash”…….. so the event has to transfer over usb3.0 connection to the Trash. If 100gb takes ~15 mins, and i exxaggerated a bit by saying 4 hours… then a 500-600gb event would take over an hour to delete, maybe approaching 2hrs depending on how many files.

I don’t know if that’s correct or not…. what do you think?

Oh god… permissions issues would be a nightmare. haha…. I wiped the fcp preferences with command-option while restarting fcp… no change: Right click one event, move to trash… hours to wait. Is that the same as manually deleting the prefs file?

The library is 2TB in size, and the 8tb external drive its on has 4tb free… the clips for each event are in the event itself. Vanilla set up mostly.

I have an i9 macbookpro with an 8tb SSD and 64gb ram so it should rip through most anything…. i don’t think it’s my system that’s the issue. There are 4tb free.

Next step… reinstall fcp. Fingers crossed!

Yea i deleted all possible render files and proxy files etc… i didn’t do the preference files tho. Will try that now. I’ve been going one event at a time, if i tried to line up a 3rd event for delete i’d get an error saying that i had to wait for current processes to finish. I’ll try to scrub the preference and see how that goes when these 2 are finished deleting in a couple hrs.

    Cheers man

what process are you following? Go right to the folder where the luts are installed… not in fcp… in the Finder app. I posted the path above

    got it…..

Custom LUTs are in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/ProApps/Custom LUTs

surf to that folder and organize as desired.

  • Actually now that i think about it, i only feel dumb because i’ve obviously done it correctly before and simply forgot. The method by which you add a destination in final cut, dragging the icon to the sidebar, … for how simple the task is I wonder why they couldn’t have used a more common or intuitive process (ie. clicking on the icon opens the dialog vs. dragging it to the sidebar… the drag seems to serve no purpose). Who knows…. thanks again.

  • *facepalm* doh….. wow do i feel dumb haha. Thanks man.

  • Ok thanks. It sure would be a nice feature to have… being able to hit record and tweak knobs/sliders realtime.
