February 19, 2012 at 6:16 am in reply to: Expresscard slot adapter? No slot on new MacBook ProI just picked up a slightly battered 15″ MBP for very little money. It was one of the last ones that came with an ExpressCard slot. I’m planning to use this used MBP to carry into the field on shoots for off-loading my SxS cards and leave my pristine 17″ MBP at home. So, maybe you can find a nice clean used one OR just get the Sony USB card reader (SBAC US-10). Only downside is the reader needs AC power.

I’ve seen this problem discussed in previous threads and sometime the problem can be traced to the simple act of dragging and dropping inside the Finder instead of doing it in the Sony software. IIRC, the Mac OS will write some hidden files either into the card or into the destination folder to help it keep track of the files you’re moving. This might (MIGHT) be the root of your issues, but I’m not sure. Regardless, you should always use Clip Browser or XDCAM Browser with the CRC checkbox enabled.

Does PP have any other preferences when importing stills? How about image size? Also, you specified 8-bit and RGB, but how about b/w stills? FCP switcher here so this is all new to me.

I think they’ve all been different….stores and individuals. After all, it’s kind of hard to screw up a solid state piece of memory encased in a metal case! I’m not saying it isn’t possible to get a bad card, but maybe I’ve just been lucky.

Jim, I’ve bought 4 or 5 used Sony SxS and SanDisk cards on eBay and they’ve all been flawless.

I have the Century 0.6 and it does a fairly good job. I believe the .70 (.75?) is a zoom-through. There IS some curvature with my .6 when you get it aligned with straight walls, but it does the job when you need to go wide. Just keep the dust off of the front element as they really light up when they get hit by direct sunlight.

I don’t want to make work for somebody else, but it would fantastic if one of our pro members here could do a proper “head to head” comparison of compression softwares. Use clips of the usual problem footage and post some frame blowups. This would be SO helpful.

It almost sounds like one of your cards might have a tiny edge sticking up and catching these springs. You might want to check all your cards and see if there is something sticking out. It won’t have to be off by much to cause this problem.

[Don Greening] “A pad is a term used to describe anything that will act as a step-up or step-down transformer for an audio signal. If the audio is too loud you need to reduce the volume before it gets recorded. If the audio is too soft then do the reverse. EX cameras have a trim control (pad) for each audio channel that you can adjust separately.”
Don, I’m puzzled by your answer. I’ve NEVER seen a reference to a pad being used to “step-up” an audio signal. The only pads I’ve ever seen are voltage dividers that reduce signal by fixed steps (-10dB, -20dB, etc.). Do you have a link to this?

As of today, I’d say this one would do nicely:

I know I want one and I’ll make my EX1 my B-roll camera.
