What exactly do you mean by running faster in the background?
You also mentioned something about working off of a server? If you are accessing your media via Ethernet on a server that will cause significant problems with your file performance if you are not set up properly.
Also… i would recommend trashing your cache files, i have found sometimes that will clear up application funkiness.
Make sure your programs are quit first then go to:
homefolder > Library > cache: trash the files in that folder.

One thing you can try is to delete you cache files, your user ones, not the browser.
Go to your home folder > Library > Cache; Make sure all your programs are quit completely. Then move to the trash all of the files in that Cache folder.
As long as all programs are quit you should be able to empty the trash with no problem. Some times a couple random files will not delete… hit continue when the warning window tells you about it, it will delete all the rest.
Once you have emptied the trash… give your machine a re-start.
Hopefully that will speed your web browsers up for you and maybe even speed up some other things as well.

FCP’s batch lists are Tab delimitated text files, so in theory if your excel file was saved as a tab delimitated text file, and you have the columns separated for the different columns in FCP, it should recognize it and import it.
One thing you might try is to export a batch list from either an empty project (or one that you have started) and use that file as your excel logging template. That way your columns are set for you.
You should have no problem opening a new project, then go to:
File -> import -> batch list
choose your log file and everything should go right into your browser window. Make sure you fill out the reel numbers so when you go to batch capture, the tapes will match up properly.

Let me just start by saying how much i hate PPT and getting videos to play back reliable is so frustrating; however, i think i have found a solution that seems to work.
I create powerpoints with WMVs embedded all the time and this is what i do to ensure my clients can play them back.
My first question is what versions of powerpoint are you using. Older versions don’t play as well with video as some of the newer versions, i.e. Office 2007 or even 2003 (2008 or 2004 mac versions).
Any version earlier than 2003 has issues with video playback, they work, but not as well as 2003 and later. I have had videos that play fine in Window Media Player but just come up as a white screen with audio playing back when in powerpoint. So your playback issue might have nothing to do with your video file but your PPT version.
Now, once you get that PPT together and the video is playing back, I highly recommend you burn the whole presentation to a CD using the burn to CD export function. That will consolidate the presentation and videos to one folder on the disc and ensure the links will stay.
Depending on your compression settings, the video might playback fine from the CD (i will typically compress my video to a bit rate that will allow playback from the disc). If it does not, you can then copy the contents of the disc to a folder on the computer, and the project will be all together in a nice neat package and the links should all be ok.
hopefully that helps out.

Another issue i have found when using the migration assistant going from PPC to Intel is the user preference files.
the apps for the most part should be ok because they are universal. However, if you have not cleaned out your cache files and preferences in your User Library they can cause all sorts of quirky issues.
Before you do a complete clean install, i would create a new user and test to see if the issues are still occurring.

Thanks for your response Colin
Putting another controller card is definitely an option. I guess i was just trying to avoid as much as possible the shuffling of my Drive Arrays.
Copying to another drive is possible to, but then i start duplication source media and graphic files which i wanted to try to avoid too.
really i was just throwing the question out there to see what others are doing.
any time i look up multi-system project sharing… most that comes up is SAN (which i would love to do, but just isn’t cost effective for my small set up).
thanks again for your response

Thanks Shane for your response.
I have thought about GiGe sharing of the RAID from the main system. I wasn’t sure what the bandwidth would be like, since it wouldn’t be a direct connection and there is some other computer traffic on the network.
But i’ll have to give that a fair shot and see if it will work out.

April 28, 2008 at 10:16 pm in reply to: All right. Who’s brave? Who’s bold? Who likes Aerosmith’s Living on the Edge?[Shane Ross] “ssues 6.0.3 fixes…like the “file too new” message. “
Does that update really fix that issue? I’ve upgraded on my home system, but not on the day work horse… too many projects in the middle of. But if it really fixes that “file too new message” it might be worth the chance. I have a bunch of project that i can’t open now since i have upgraded to my new MacPro and Leopard.
At home i haven’t noticed any issues… but like i said… my day to day work horse is what i use the most so i hesitate to mess with that.
Oh and of course Aerosmith Rocks!

I am having the same issue. I am on leopard, and just tried to export to flash for the first time. I just hangs at the start of the process. Then if i try to cancel i get the spinning beach ball.
I don’t really have a tiger system set up to test.
has anyone else had this issue?

You can also first export with compressor and create an animation of the full project. the file will be huge; however, the graphics will be super crisp.
you can then use that animation export to create your MPEG2 files. Depending on your computer setup it might take some extra time and horse power, but the results will be worth it.
