  • Converting DVD Video for editing in FCP

I have interesting problem relating to the type of editing that I do, that gets most of our video from DVDs. The Video we get are view by watchers who select usable clips for the project, bring them in with Moviemaker and spits them out as WMV’s ( because there small file size) or AVI’s (but there to big). I then have to convert them in Sorenson Squeeze for FCP. Now there is some lose of quality in the process and thats the issue. We’re trying to reduce the number steps.
We would like to be able bring the clips in a batch capture, But i don’t know if there is DVD or software solution for our problem. And then we want our watchers able to encode the file in a usable format so that I don’t have to re-render them to QT.
Also is there a way to bring into FCP Excel offline’s of in and out points for batch capture?
    sometimes we do get miniDVC’s.

FCP’s batch lists are Tab delimitated text files, so in theory if your excel file was saved as a tab delimitated text file, and you have the columns separated for the different columns in FCP, it should recognize it and import it.

One thing you might try is to export a batch list from either an empty project (or one that you have started) and use that file as your excel logging template. That way your columns are set for you.

You should have no problem opening a new project, then go to:

File -> import -> batch list

choose your log file and everything should go right into your browser window. Make sure you fill out the reel numbers so when you go to batch capture, the tapes will match up properly.
