  • Whenever a new update comes out, i.e. 10.0.3, 10.0.4, etc., It tells you that all project files will be updated for the new version. I assume it creates a new copy, rather than altering the original file. Not sure if that’s really your question though.

I have the program on internal drive, project and render files on on a second drive and then all media on a larger third drive. Regardless, I think you’re fighting the obvious. USB for video isn’t fast enough, never has been. Hence the importance of firewire. I doubt that Apple will take the time to optimize FCPX for USB2 when its looking to thunderbolt for the future.

When you choose to optimize media, it creates the ProRes files. Once the media is optimized, it automatically switches over and refers to the new optimized (pro res) media files. The media should definitely be on an external drive but you should stick with firewire (or thunderbolt).

Did they actually show Dual Monitors and other upcoming features or just tell you they’re coming, i.e. a rehash of whats already on the website??

I heard they’ll be announcing this new thing called a magnetic timeline. It will revolutionize video editing!

The TV does seem a little counterintuitive for apple. On the one hand, it would complete the Apple Ecosystem and allow you to stream itunes, airplay, etc. in a centralized area. On the other hand, the tv isn’t mobile and the industry as a whole is moving towards smaller, mobile devices to consume media. They definitely wouldn’t come out with a 5K TV. Its too far ahead of the market and the masses wouldn’t even know what 5K means (and they certanily wouldn’t pay the premium for it). Not to mention, tv sales have been slowing for several years now. Unless Apple finds a way to completely reinvent the market or come up with a “new” tv-like product, I think a tv would be a mistake for them. BTW, I just cancelled cable and only watch stuff on my Ipad or computer now 🙂

Got it. Thanks. Still running firewire 800, but thunderbolt drives certainly make sense for my next upgrade. Now I just have to go make more money to send to Apple 🙁

Thanks! Tried reading the wiki on AVX and could understand about 1% of it. This is much clearer.

I’m waiting for the next FCPX update to see if I’m sticking with it and upgrading hardware or not. This certainly helps the decision!

Just so I’m clear…FCPX will run faster on a Thunderbolt EQUIPPED mac, meaning you don’t necessarily have to be running thunderbolt drives to see the improved performance?

Thanks for clearing this up. Still get the spinning beachball so this could help alot.

Did anyone notice the guy had to switch his tablet with another one because it wasn’t working? Also, is it just me or was that most boring keynote ever.
