  • What are the “Old Version” project files in the Final Cut Project folders?

Posted by Ian Brown on July 1, 2012 at 7:43 am

I have searched the internet and the ASC forums and cannot find an answer. People have made suggestions and guesses but no hard facts, so do you know for certain what they are?
They were brought to my attention a couple of weeks ago when I was told they were copies of project files that were saved each time FCP X was updated, so that should the new update be troublesome you could return to the previous version to continue the project.

However, you will notice the date on the second one is 17 June 2012 which is fine but I updated to FCP X 10.0.5 on 21 June 2012 (as a first birthday celebration for the app!!!)

If it was created during the update you would expect the date to be 21 June 2012.

So if they are projects that will work in previous versions of FCP X, exactly how do you use them and is there any way of telling which version created them other than by trial and error?

Whenever a new update comes out, i.e. 10.0.3, 10.0.4, etc., It tells you that all project files will be updated for the new version. I assume it creates a new copy, rather than altering the original file. Not sure if that’s really your question though.
