Assuming you want to use the same gradient on all your letters, then I would do it by using the text as an alpha matte. So type whatever text you want on its own layer. Then on a new layer, create the gradient you would like to use.

Actually, I think you can forget the RAM comment – its your cache which is full, but purging will free it up to whatever space you have. You can allocate more space to this in preferences

Try going to the top menu bar in After Effects and selecting >edit >purge, then select “all memory and disk cache”

You will then need to ram preview the timeline area again.

As said by Andy K above, it’s probably trying to “corner pin” on the null object, and there is nothing visible there, so even if it’s working right it won’t look like much is happening

Hi, yeah either motion tracker or you can use Mocha AE which is built in within After Effects. It’s worth spending a little bit of time getting to know that as it will give better results a lot of the time I think, but is a bit more complicated to setup. I use it a lot so feel free to reply if you have a query and I’ll try to help

Could you have imported that layer with “document dimensions” instead of “layer dimensions”? This could mean it creates the drop shadow just outside of your working area and so might not show up

Do you have the 3D layer switch activated on that shape layer by accident?

Might also be helpful to say what is in the comp – is it footage with wrong frame rate for example, or something with a complex expression or an out of date plugin or script?

You could try:

A – New project and import the problem comps, save as new file.

B – Try to open problem comp / project, and when you get a successful go (you mentioned it doesn’t always crash), then copy and paste the contents of the problem comp into a brand new comp. Then delete the problem comp and save as new project.
