Ok, so here’s what I figured out. When my machine was giving me that error I also couldn’t use any of the AE or third party plug ins. I finally ended up doing a full uninstall and reinstalling AE. Now I don’t have that problem anymore.

As Johnny suggested color it in in Photoshop, but another way to animate it would be to use, effect> stylize> write on to transition between the uncolored and colored in versions.
