Exactly, in BMD devices the SSD drives are being used as flash drives.
It’s a great lean data capturing bridge format file system, it wasn’t meant for editing video.

My understanding is that format was to make flash drives and cards cross platform compatible, that it wasn’t meant to be used on hard drives.

My wild guess as to why the Mac Pro hasn’t been updated yet, aside from the fact that Moore’s law is slowing rapidly:
– AMD just recently released chips that would be a significant upgrade to the D700s.
– If the nMP was announced in June of 2013 with then previous gen CPUs, it’s most likely the fact they were designing the new form factor when those chips were brand new. There will probably be less RnD to work out for an updated model so my guess is it will have the current gen CPUs.
– Most folks who preordered didn’t get their hands on them until April 2014, just over two years ago.
– Thunderbolt 3 isn’t out yet.
– Apple is hurt that people call it the “Trash Can”. They are waiting to release an updated model until people start calling it the “Little Black Keg” dammit!
Calling it the ‘trash can’ is why we can’t have nice things.

Since v10.1 libraries are more similar to the way project files were in FCP 7>.
You can open your library on another system you just need to double click it or you can go to file-open library.

“It’s nice in PP, it allows you to download and import footage into PP in one go, essentially it’s a web browser window inside PP that allows some interaction with the NLE.
The FCP X helper app does what I need it to which is give me a ‘set and forget’ upload cue.

Glad it was sort of resolved, I didn’t know what to reply with as that wasn’t something I’ve run into.

[James Taylor] “I now run everything through ClipWrap. It doesn’t actually convert anything, just wraps it. Very fast. And my Macbook loves the files. Wouldn’t edit AVCHD files without it.
“If you import via the import window as opposed to drag from the finder to the event FCP X does this as well and you don’t have to wait to start cutting while it is importing in the background.
Is there something that ClipWrap does that has advantages to letting FCP X rewrap the files? I stopped using it since native MXF handling came.

ctrl-opt-S will expand them in the timeline so you can adjust them individually.

There are various services that vary on features and accessibility to data. Some are just designed for peace of mind that your data can be retrieved for a fee by them sending you a hard drive if a disaster strikes.
I’ve worked out of a few facilities with fantastically fast internet speeds where I could upload a half terabyte of Red footage in a couple hours. I think this is where things are headed, but it’s not practical for most video professionals.
The hybrid hard drive approach suggested by another used might be feasible with cloud backups.
