Do you want the imprint of your logo on each of the boxes to move with the box it’s imprinted on? To clarify, would you like each box to keep the geometry it has before it starts animating up and down?

[Melissa Evans] “What I’m thinking of is shooting the whole scene as it is, and then shooting the exact same thing but without the invisible person, is that correct? Then in AE, use a difference matte to make the person invisible?”

If your camera is locked down on a tripod then you probably won’t even need the difference matte. You can simply transition from one set of footage to another in a localized area with a mask or matte.

You may need to color correct the shot some to match. You’ll definitely need to think through what else is visible in the shot that may move between takes (trees blowing in the wind? cars driving by?).

You may even be able to get away with a still image from the beginning of a take (before the talent has come on screen). This would require matching the grain/noise on the video.

The Distort > Displacement Map effect is a good one for creating distortions based on a source layer. This effect will probably be somewhat familiar. Apply the effect to your LL layer and point the Displacement Map Layer at your source footage, then you can set horizontal and vertical displacement values (in pixels). 50% gray in the selected displacement layer’s channel will not displace at all, full black displaces in the negative and full white displaces in the positive.

It’s often good practice to pre-comp your source video footage and use some color correction to get your channels looking good for the Displacement Map effect.

You could also use the Distort > Turbulent Displace effect to create distortion without any input footage.

Do you have the PNG sequence loaded into both the Color and Alpha channels of the material? Does the Alpha channel preview thumbnail look correct? If not you might try switching some of the checkboxes in the Alpha channel.

  • If you want to save an animation preset for just the expression on a property then make sure that property doesn’t have any keyframes.

Text animators are kind of a black box, so I figured it’d be easier to upload one than try and talk through it. So here’s a text animator I whipped up. I think it may be close to what you want to achieve. If you have any questions about it let me know.

If you’re holding Shift (in CS6) or Option/Alt (at least as early as CS3) while parenting it can cause the layer to move.

Shift will move the child layer to the parent layer’s location (set the child layer’s position to [0,0]). Option will move the child layer relative to the parent layer’s position (the child layer’s position property remains unchanged).

If you look at the position property of the child layer while you try the three parenting modes (no modifier, +shift, +opt) you should see the difference.

Look up “text animators” in the help and online.

With such large numbers you could use meters and avoid some of those issues. C4D includes a preference to automatically convert units so that if you are viewing in cm and you type in 1.5m it will be converted to 150cm.

Are you looking at local coordinates? These represent the coordinates relative to the parent object. When you create a group all of the objects in that group become children of a null. You can change to view global coordinates instead. I think you could also move your parent object’s (the null’s) axis to the world origin [0,0,0].
