    A little more detail.

I see the volume caustics as well as my volumetric lights in the Atmosphere multipass layer and nothing at all in the Caustics layer. I’d like to have the Atmosphere and Caustics separate if possible.

Not sure how this plugin works. Does it create a spline or does it define its own ‘arrow’ object?

One possible solution would be to lower the phong shading angle on the Extrude NURBs phong tag some, but I think that would only be hiding some of the geometry issues. Another guess is that the Fillet may be misbehaving, try changing the settings on the Extrude NURBs Caps and see what you get.

[Marc Lucas] “Wanting to select a fixed size with the Marquee. I input my pixel area size but everytime I try and select on the image the edges of the image become selected and not the actual size I specified.”

Sounds like the image is smaller than the size you’re specifying. Are you certain that you’re giving the fixed size in pixels (px)? If the field is set to another unit this may lead to unexpected sizes.

If it’s still not working an alternative would be using the Select > Transform Selection function and entering units in the horizontal and vertical scale boxes. These default to 100% x 100% but you can enter pixel or inch values in the boxes simply by putting ‘px’ or ‘in’ after the value: “256 px” for example.

Not sure about the import preferences (make sure that they’re interpreted as progressive footage?) but I’d definitely recommend importing your image sequences directly into AE if quality is a big concern.

I don’t have experience with cr2 files personally but the AE help seems to indicate that they are supported. There may be some more helpful information for you here:

I just tried this in R13 and I can’t reproduce your problem. Can you provide some screenshots or a file?

You may be able to use the multipass functionality to generate the required shadow passes. Depending on your need you could then either multiply them into the background you’re compositing onto or maybe generate an alpha from them (mileage may vary).

You could also look into the Compositing Background setting on the Compositing Tag. It doesn’t generate an alpha but it may be useful to you.

Also make sure that your obscuration layer does not have collapse transformations/continuously rasterize enabled.

Screenshots of the problem would be very helpful.

September 29, 2012 at 6:14 am in reply to: After Effects Pixelated Shadows

Make sure that you do not have any layers occupying the same, or close to the same space. After Effects uses a kind of a faux-3D that can get very confused when layers are close to coplanar.

The other thing you can try is going into Composition Settings > Advanced > Options… to the right of the “Renderer” selection menu and changing the Shadow Map Resolution. Usually a higher resolution will increase shadow quality, but if you’re not seeing the error at lower than full resolution you might also try a lower resolution here.

If you’re going to be working with this client any more please advise them to consult with you on best practices for lighting and shooting green screen footage prior to future work. This footage is going to haunt my nightmares and I’m not even the one that has to deal with it!

[Steven Hilton] “The logo is the size of all the boxes. The logo is etched into them. I’m only concerned with the boxes the lOgo isnt a factor”

If that’s the case then you should be able to use the Formula effector on your system to drive vertical position. A formula like sin((w + t) * 360 * f) should work (may need u or v substituted in place of w depending on the orientation and the desired direction of waves).

You could then adjust the animation with further effectors or dynamics.
