July 18, 2007 at 3:23 pm in reply to: CS3 colour management is driving me nuts

If you have your color management entirely ‘turned off’ then I believe AE uses your monitor’s color space as both the working space and destination space. I think it would be better to use the color management features to your advantage than to throw them out the window and expect everything to work perfectly. I haven’t looked at the help files for this particular problem yet, but I’m sure that Adobe has something in there about it.

How did you capture/compress this DVCPRO HD footage? What is its destination?

The shortcut to add Time Remapping to a layer is command-option-t (ctrl-alt-t on PC). But you might also want to explore the Layer menu, you never know what else you might find.

July 17, 2007 at 8:11 pm in reply to: Only render square pixels?

[goodtimej] “I have incessantly messed with the render queue settings and no matter what, every file is tall and skinny.”

This sounds like your footage is being rendered out properly, but the program you’re viewing it with isn’t interpreting it properly.

Pixel aspect ratio has been covered time and time again on the forums, so I’d suggest you do a search if you’re worried about it. You don’t have a problem, you just think you do =)

NTSC DV will always render out at 720×480 pixels, it’s how those pixels are interpreted by the end device that determines whether it will be 16×9 (stretched 120% horizontally) or 4×3 (squashed 90% horizontally).

I think it would definitely be possible… although probably more trouble than it’s worth. At a certain point 3D is best accomplished in a 3D program, take it from someone who created an entire 3D facade for a theater in AE =O

Shutter Angle and Shutter Phase are designed to work as they would in real world cameras, with the exception that you can enter Shutter Angles in excess of 360

July 16, 2007 at 3:35 am in reply to: How do you really know? (multiprocessing)

There is a setting in the multiple processor preferences to render multiple frames simultaneously, this gives that ‘discontiguous’ feeling to the render. If you don’t enable it, AE will use each core/processor to process different parts of the same frame so the preview/render should still be faster. I don’t know exactly what this means in terms of the benefit of this setting…

July 16, 2007 at 3:30 am in reply to: How to smooth out motion tracking?

You can apply the expression smooth() to any keyframed property to smooth the values. It can take a few arguments, I don’t have AE in front of me now so I can’t tell you in what order to enter them but you should be able to find them in the AE Help.

The most common arguments to change are the duration of the sample and the number of samples.

I may not have followed this thread correctly, but you need to create a keyframe in the ‘Mask Shape’ property of the mask, select that keyframe, copy it and paste that into the brush position of Write-On… or use Stroke =)
