  • Two Questions about repeating motions (looping stuff).

    QUESTION 1:

Okay, I’ve nearly gone from one end of the Internet to the other and back looking for an answer and so far nothing.

Within AE, how do I loop a simple animation or motion. For instance, when compositing a flash animation of two people sitting in a car behind a PSD layer of a car, and a PRE COMP of 5 layers on the windshield which cycle as light reflecting off the glass. Each of these white layers take a section of the glass, and cycling through them creates the effect of light crossing the windshield.

I have a pre comp wherein 5 layers are stacked, 2 begins where 1 ends, and so on. But to keep the layers going I had to resort to copying and pasting the precomp or stacking copies of all the layers over and over and over again. ARGG!

How do I set something to loop continuously throughout the comp?

    QUESTION TWO:

For instance, unlike question 1, if I had a single layer such as a leg stepping or the tire of a car turning, how do i loop a single motion so I’m not copying a gabillion keyframes of the guy’s leg to have him step 50 times.

    Thanks!!

    1) for looping the comp:

This from Darby Edelen (wuzelwazel) works:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=2&postid=906585

When you drop that layer into the longer main comp to loop it, and add time remapping, you can now pull that layer’s outpoint to the right, as far as you want it to keep looping.

Alternatively, you can always render out the comp, reimport and set the number of loops in the Interpret Dialogue box.

    2) for looping “leg stepping” (loops keyframes):

Click on Dan’s had, main page (the one with the vibbing Expression Aura around it), and scroll down to:

Animating a Walk-Cycle Using Loop Expressions

All things loopy, all variations are demonstrated in the comp “Intro”.
    The basic expression is:

    loop_out (“cycle”, 0)

Just Copy the expression, alt-click the stopwatch that has the keyframes you want to loop, then Paste in the expression.

Check this quick little video out for more information, it might help you visualize what’s happening:

You can loop any animated property.
