[Bill Paterno] “Could it possibly be upper field first?”
Maybe, but doubtful if you’re working with NTSC. A Lossless render out of AE will tell you whether it’s the m2v codec (or settings in the output module) or not so I’d try that first.

What is your source footage’s field order? You should interpret the footage inside of AE as whatever it is (None for Progressive), if you see bad aliasing around the edges try enabling ‘Preserve Edges.’
What are your settings for rendering to m2v? Do you see the same artifacts/aliasing when you render Lossless?
Are you setting the output to render fields in the Output Module, the Render Settings or both?

Use a Track Matte, check the AE Help (F1) if you don’t know what that is =)

The answer lies in Steve Roberts’ post. Turn on the In & Out point columns in your timeline. It’s the small icon in the lower left corner of the timeline that looks like brackets {}.
Then select all the layers you want to adjust in time, drag your mouse on the any of the selected layers’ in point values to change the In (or Out) points of all of the selected layers relative to their original position. DON’T type anything in the field as this will set all of the layers to the same In point, you must use your mouse to drag the values.

You’re most likely looking for Image > Image Size. There are a lot of options in the Image Size dialog. You can change the Print Size of your image without affecting the total number of pixels, you can leave the Print Size the same and decrease the size in pixels, or you can change both simultaneously. I recommend looking at the Photoshop help file if you have questions about which you want to do.
We’ll be here if there are any obstacles =)

[leejam99] “Maximum Mem Usage: 120% = 3.0 GB”
As far as I understand it, 3GB is the maximum that any process can use in a 32-bit OS (technically 4GB, but there is overhead for the OS). Don’t ask for details on that because I don’t have them (;
Maximum memory usage in that preference panel is able to go above 100% due to paging files/virtual memory that the OS can give to AE. The more important figure in that panel is the Memory Cache, since you have multiple processors you could turn on ‘Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously’ and adjust your Memory Cache setting so that each of the 2 process is able to access 2GB (or so) of RAM. That way you will be using more of your total RAM.
The annoying part about ‘Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously’ is that AE takes some time to boot up the additional processes needed to accomplish this (for 3 extra processes on my machine it takes about 45 seconds to do this). So for short renders and RAM previews it doesn’t really make sense.
AE is still able to take advantage of your multiple cores/processors by splitting up the rendering between cores within one frame, but when you render multiple frames simultaneously you should have the added benefit of being able to use more of your RAM.

[Dave LaRonde] “To make your work a LOT faster, turn off the lights if at all possible. Then watch things speed up.”
Turn on Draft 3D mode (between the Live Update button and the Shy guy above the timeline) and it will disable lights, shadows and depth of field. Turn off your comp motion blur switch and RAM preview and you should be flying again =)

[Dave LaRonde] “AE certainly isn’t the best application going to create surround audio, so you’d end up in an audio application anyway.”
That’s a good point, but then the question becomes: did the original poster want true 5.1 audio or would stereo panning and levels suffice?

[Brossy] “The only way I know how to do this would be to ‘fake’ it with sound editing programs and just try and match the timing up.
So yeah, is there anyway to position audio in 3d space?”
You could do this using expressions. I did something similar once, but it was pretty rudimentary. The proper way to do it would be to find the position relative to the camera, and the relative angle from the view so that you could alter the levels of the right and left channels independently. It is a little complicated to set up, but then it gives you your results automatically.
I’ll try to re-hash my old expression with some new fangled techniques I didn’t know at the time if you think that would be helpful.
