Been using AE for a while now but still haven’t figured out if it’s possible to move all my layers at once in the time line using the keyboard. Say I need to shift 8 layers by one second but keep the way the layers are timed to each other. is it possible to do that using a couple keystrokes ( i literally mean a couple and not shft page donw 3 times and then [ for each layer). Sorry for the dumb question. I’m an editor not an AE guy. Thanks in advance for help.

Shift-select all the layers. Then do Shift-alt-page up/down.

or Shift-select all the layers, set your time position to where ever you want it to start and Shift-drag the layers over, it should snap.

    1. Select the first layer
    2. Shift-select the last layer
    3. Hit alt+shift+pageDn three times.

Howzatferya? You can’t do fewer strokes than that, since you need to select the layers first, then for step 3, if there were a numeric entry available, you’d have to type 30 and enter, no? Same number of keystrokes.

Remember, AE is a lousy editor, but a decent compositor. So the workflow is different from that of an editing app. But you knew that. 😉

    Anybody else?

thanks for the help. But is there no way to just shift all the layers by a specific amount using the keys. So if I wanted to move everything by 3seconds and 7 frames. or would i have to shift alt pg down 12 times and then alt page up 3 times?

Thanks guys, that’s exactly what I was wanting to know.[Steve Roberts] “Remember, AE is a lousy editor, but a decent compositor. So the workflow is different from that of an editing app. But you knew that. ;-)”
True it is a lowsey editor, but sometimes after you’ve already done the edit and ducked your way to AE to fancy it all up the revision fairy comes knocking.

If you want something numeric, you can make the in/out point columns visible in the timeline (R-click on the column header), select the layers, then type .. but that would line ’em all up at that in-point.

AE needs a “slide” column, I suppose. 🙂

I totally forgot about those columns! Can you select multiple layers and slide the values with the mouse? With other properties this will adjust them all relatively (+50 to the x value of each position) instead of absolutely (set the x value of each position to 50)… It would be a shame if Adobe didn’t provide this functionality there =/

The answer lies in Steve Roberts’ post. Turn on the In & Out point columns in your timeline. It’s the small icon in the lower left corner of the timeline that looks like brackets {}.

Then select all the layers you want to adjust in time, drag your mouse on the any of the selected layers’ in point values to change the In (or Out) points of all of the selected layers relative to their original position. DON’T type anything in the field as this will set all of the layers to the same In point, you must use your mouse to drag the values.
