I didn’t make myself clear – the tape was garbled on both my “deck” (Canon camcorder) and my Panasonic camera (from which it was recorded).

Now, I’m getting an error message on the Panasonic camera when I try to clean the tape heads. So it seems like the Panasonic camera, sadly.

It is recorded as DV. Been using a camcorder Canon ZR850 as a deck (yeah, I know, probably not advisable.)

Follow-up problem – wanted to trying cleaning the tape heads with a cleaner and when I try to play the cleaner tape I get Panasonic error message “Auto Off – T_Reel Lock” message. Ouch.

I think it’s probably the tape head mechanism now.

I’ll probably look for something in between the gamer headsets and the other mics you mentioned. As you mentioned our needs are pretty low-fi, though I’d rather not have the mic in the shot.

as a follow up:

So going from DVD to PC to FCP is not going to happen.

What if the footage was not on DVD – they have captured it already or recorded it on a camera in, say, AVI format…

From what I’ve tried FCP seems to handle AVI and some WMV files. Are these usable to edit with or do I need to encode them to MOV?

(generally speaking, would the media file that the average PC user upload be worthwhile for editing use?)

Really appreciate the advice.

yeah, that was going to be the alternative option, but now it’s probably going to have to be the main way.

The more I find out about encoding from DVD on PC, editing it, etc… the less I think a user would do it over just sending the DVD.

Do you know if people need quicktime plugins to use MPEG Streamclip properly?

For instance MPEG Stream works fine for my Mac, where I’ve got QT Pro and MPEG 2 purchased add-ons.

Although it doesn’t seem to work on my PC – it said I needed MPEG 2 QT add on. Maybe that’s just a PC vs. Mac thing?

It seems I need to get a MXO, and I will soon.

As a follow up – for the time being, is it even worth doing a day of color correct?

Any thoughts on whether one of those Apple calibration settings will be even mildly more accurate than the others? For example is “Adobe RGB (1998)” better than the “Color LCD” or “Generic RGB Profile” or would using Apple’s calibration software be better?

Yes, I realize these are sort of last resort questions, but it’s what I’ve got.
