  • tape problem – garbled video and FCP error message

just noticed a problem with recent footage – the video is garbled and has some audio hissing, few pops.

    checkout image: https://omniads.com/rjj.tiff

recorded on 3 year old DVX100 with Panasonic Mini-DV tapes “for professional”

    this is the FCP error:

“Capture encounted a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved.”

    Two questions:

    1. Thoughts on whether the problem is tape or camera based? It happened on two tapes in a row but not on a third test tape (all from same box of tapes.) I’m thinking dirty tape heads, but never had that particular problem come up.

    2. Any way to salvage the footage?

    Thanks,

    D

Are you playing the tape on a deck? Which model?

Was it recorded as DVCPRO, DVCAM or DV? Mini DV tapes can be used for all these formats.

It is recorded as DV. Been using a camcorder Canon ZR850 as a deck (yeah, I know, probably not advisable.)

Follow-up problem – wanted to trying cleaning the tape heads with a cleaner and when I try to play the cleaner tape I get Panasonic error message “Auto Off – T_Reel Lock” message. Ouch.

I think it’s probably the tape head mechanism now.

You mention using a Canon camcorder for playback and then getting a Panasonic error message? Your best bet is to play the tapes in the camcorder they were recorded on. If that doesn’t work you might be lost. I’ve had some success with screwy DV tapes in a DVCProHD deck.

I didn’t make myself clear – the tape was garbled on both my “deck” (Canon camcorder) and my Panasonic camera (from which it was recorded).

Now, I’m getting an error message on the Panasonic camera when I try to clean the tape heads. So it seems like the Panasonic camera, sadly.

I think the tape was probably improperly recorded due to a head problem. You are probably screwed.

I have seen similar looking problems where the tape was accidentally recorded DVCPRO or DVCAM and played back on a mini DV only deck…but you seem certain that was not the case.

Hey I’m having the same problem with my tapes too….I’m actually using the same tapes as you but VX-2000 instead. Anyways, the same message is popping up only letting capture maybe about 10 sec of crappy footy before stopping… Did you ever solve the problem because its been bothering me for awhile now. This started happening after I updated FCP to 6, so now im not sure whether its the tape, the camera or the FCP itself…

    hey Nick –

Unfortunately I didn’t solve the problem in the cheap or workaround sense, rather we had to get the camera fixed. After calling Panasonic they mentioned that the error message from the camera usually meant bad news and had to get the tape mechanism repaired. One of the shops in NYC charged us $800 to do it.

We’ll see if it was worth it, though haven’t had problems since.

Yes I have the same problem, recorded the tapes on Canon XL1 and use the same camera as player.
No problem capturing everything into iMovie.
    any idea?

The problem I was having was with the DVX100 – got it repaired and it worked fine. (Until this week, unfortunately. May have to bring it in again.)

I’m not sure I can help you with the XL1, sorry.

Strange thing is, I don’t have problems with working on my PowerBook G4, FCP 5.0.4 and the Canon.
