    hey guys,

    I made a cut of our short in FCP for the composer with burned in timecode (@24 frames). Afterward I remembered that we actually shot 23.98 (from the RED cam) and he noticed as well on protools that the footage was coming up as 23.98 (and so obviously the burned in timecode didn’t match).

    problem is the sequence editing timebase is 23.98 but the sequence itself on the timeline seems to be 24 frames (it matches the “wrong” timecode generator @24 frames)

    so wondering if you’ve got any advice on how to get accurate burn in time code for export (just a file, not a DVD) – and know of a timecode generator that has 23.98 frame rate? FCP doesn’t seem to have it and i’ve tried “Andy’s” as well…

    You can use the TC reader on a piece of slug for this, instead. Place a piece of slug over your timeline, use the crop tool to remove most of the top & sides, then use the TC reader on the slug. It should give you frame accurate TC from the first frame of the slug. You can adjust the starting hour in the controls for the TC reader.

    Timecode is an addressing scheme, which gives a number to each frame of video. Whether the frames are played back at 24 frames per second or 23.98 frames per second, they still have one address per frame.

    There is a scheme which is called drop frame time code, which skips some frame numbers so the timecode count stay accurate to the wall clock, but it still gives one frame address number to each complete frame of video.

    So the 24 frame timecode is accurate for 23.98 video. The only issue is that it takes a little more than a second to play the 24 frames.

    For normal video at 29.97 frames per second, the number scheme is a 30 frame cycle.

    So there are two different things: the addressing scheme, and the clock. The temporal playback does not affect the addresses, just where they occur in time.

    FWIW, I don’t use the slug anymore. I make a “blank” .png, .tif or .tga in Photoshop that has an all black alpha. That way, you don’t need to use the crop, you just drop the TC reader into it, and again adjust the starting time to match your timeline.
