you can use the keyframe assistant to convert audio to keyframes, then link your glow effect (opacity of an adj layer if you do it that way, or the strength of the effect…) to the newly created audio amplitude keyframes

if you are doing anything in AFX that has muliple layers where the drive needs to be accessed constantly, i would suggest a raid on any afx system, but when you are talking 4 or 8 cores then definitely.

there may be an easier way, depending on whats in the shot.
w/o seeign the shot its impossible to tell, but if you have enough frames to come up with a clean plate, stabilize the shot, use some masks to roto the rope, it would be much better than trying to paint it out frame by frame… but i w/o seeing the shot its impossible to tell
