Well, I think I’ve solved my problem!
I was rendering in ProRes (HQ)…. but my fcp sequence is ‘non-HQ’—just regular Apple ProRes.

It doesn’t seem like mixing those 2 formats should cause this problem!!! But still, I’m happy that I have a non-stammering title now!! So thank you.
    Best,
    Danny

Just to clarify, the title is playing back smoothly in AE, and the rendered file is playing back smoothly in Quicktime. It’s only when I bring it into FCP and render it does it become ‘stammered’. And again, all my AE render settings match my FCP sequence settings. (Apple ProRes 422, 23.98 fps, 1280 x 720).
    Thanks.

February 21, 2010 at 2:49 pm in reply to: Multiclip Problems

thank you for responding Jop. I don’t have any render files to delete! still, i tried scaling the image up so i’d have to render it, rendered it, then deleted the render files…and re-rendered. didn’t change anything. i also tried deleting the fcp prefs. nothing.

anyone else have any thoughts? i want to watch my angles live while i cut between them… seems like a very basic use of multiclip, and that’s why i went through the process of creating *a lot* of multiclips all day friday. and it’s just not happening.

also, fwiw, i was having this problem at work, on a quad-core running fcp 7, and also at home (testing), on a mbp running fcp 6. is this just a freak coincidence?

I’m having a similar problem. Basically, when i play my sequence (that has a multiclip edited into it) the viewer (with multiclips diplayed) doesn’t mirror the canvas. The viewer updates correctly to wherever i stop playing the sequence. But i don’t see the viewer playing in real time while the sequence plays down. The viewer displays multiclips; it just doesn’t play them in real-time.

I’ve double clicked on the clip in the timeline to load it into the viewer; I’ve selected ‘open’ on both viewer and canvas; I have ‘play multiclips’ selected in the playback settings; I’ve displayed the multiclip button setup.

Is there something else i should be doing?

    I’m running fcp 6.0.6.

    thanks in advance.

thanks for your reply Shane. that is exactly how i work, project on system drive, backed up to media drive.
but according to your logic here, it would be fine to run your project off the media drive, provided you have your project backed up somewhere else.
i’m just trying to understand whether any considerations of ‘performance’ come into play here in recommending keeping the project on the system drive.

    thanks again!

Well maybe that’s the case, but i found pretty vague answers to the question…maybe i didn’t look hard enough.
The most helpful post i found was the one encouraging people to read the apple ‘HD and advanced formats’ manual that comes with FCP, which indeed provided a very clear description of the process in FCP 6. Great for someone like me who is totally new to the process.

Shane Ross’ tutorial was great…for FCP 5. But it needs updating…and it actually confused me.

Noah, what dialogue box are you referring to?

I’ve found the “Log and Transfer” instructions in the apple documentation, so hopefully this does the trick…..
