    Hi-
I recall reading that it’s better to have your project files running off your system drive, rather than your media drive. However, a quick search just came up with nothing to that effect.

I’m wondering if that is still or was ever the case, and what the thinking might be there. (fcp simply runs more effeciently with the project on the system drive? running a project off your media drive creates unecessary throughput? it’s inconsequential?)

    thanks for you thoughts!

Run your FCP project file off the system drive. BACK IT UP to the Media drive. If you lost the media drive…if it failed, and you had the project AND media on that drive, then you lost EVERYTHING. If you lost the drive, but have the project file, then you can always recapture.

Best to have the project file on the system drive.

thanks for your reply Shane. that is exactly how i work, project on system drive, backed up to media drive.
but according to your logic here, it would be fine to run your project off the media drive, provided you have your project backed up somewhere else.
i’m just trying to understand whether any considerations of ‘performance’ come into play here in recommending keeping the project on the system drive.

    thanks again!

    no performance issues, nor advantages.

What happens if your system gets stolen? We live in earthquake country, so your system could get crushed to dust at any moment. Play it smart, back it up to a space on the internet at least once a day. You can ftp or use your iDisk.

I back up all my FCP XML’s to a second drive and a USB Jump drive, one can never be too careful.
