  • stammered playback on AE render

    Hello,
    I’m editing a project in Apple ProRes, 1280 x 720, 23.98 fps.
I’m bringing in a rendered title from After Effects.
Problem: The title is playing back ‘stammered’ –it is getting stuck on certain frames for 2 or 3 frames, and then jumping forward.
Interestingly, I’ve found that in ‘Video Processing’ under Sequence Settings, if i select always render in RGB, and play the title as a real-time effect (ie, with a light-grey bar, ie, ‘Full’) the title plays smoothly. However, when i render the sequence for output (which I think I have to!)–and the title’s bar becomes blue–the playback becomes stammered again!
Any help would be much appreciated!!

    Thanks,
    Danny

p.s., all my AE render setings match my fcp sequence settings.

Just to clarify, the title is playing back smoothly in AE, and the rendered file is playing back smoothly in Quicktime. It’s only when I bring it into FCP and render it does it become ‘stammered’. And again, all my AE render settings match my FCP sequence settings. (Apple ProRes 422, 23.98 fps, 1280 x 720).
    Thanks.

Well, I think I’ve solved my problem!
I was rendering in ProRes (HQ)…. but my fcp sequence is ‘non-HQ’—just regular Apple ProRes.

It doesn’t seem like mixing those 2 formats should cause this problem!!! But still, I’m happy that I have a non-stammering title now!! So thank you.
    Best,
    Danny

Something else to consider… Make certain that AE’s frame rate is set to 23.976 – not 23.98. 23.98 is simply shorthand FCP uses for 23.976. The thing is – AE takes your input literally. Playing true 23.98 in a 23.98 FCP sequence (which actually wants to see 23.976) often stutters.
