Thank you so much. I’ve got two more days on my warranty so I guess it’s time to get it into the shop.

  • I think it was just a side track. Someone suggested using Sorensen. You can export using the Sorensen codec through Quicktime Conversions. You still have to convert that to mp2 which, although it looks pretty decent, is just another step and an additional compression which will introduce additional compression artifacts. I don’t suggest doing it.

This has been a good thread and I appreciate everyone’s participation. I believe, no matter how long I’ve been doing this type of work or how much I think I know, there’s always someone who could teach me a thing or two.
    Thanks again,

  • I experienced this too. Your best bet is to export the HD timeline as an uncompressed .mov file and then import it onto an SD timeline. The last time I did this was a while back. But, I believe it will at least minimize t the shifting. If your lucky enough to have a card that will down convert from HD to SD (Kona 2, etc) then you should have no shifting at all. The world of HD and SD take some true skills to navigation between the two. Hope it helps.

  • Dennis,
I hate to say it, but I’ve been dealing with this for two to three years. I just finally wised up enough to ask if anyone else had the same problem. Now, finally, I don’t think I’m crazy anymore thanks to you and the other guys on this thread. I honestly thought I had a bug there for a while. You know this kinda stuff is enough to make a guy wanna toss FCP and get something that’s consistent. That’s hard core, coming from me.

    Thanks for the input!

And as for Jon’s post, he forgot to mention that my telephone number is 667-2997. Get it … “29.97” It must be destiny, I didn’t request that number. A friend brought it to my attention : )
    Thanks again,
    Danny

  • Jon,
Sorry I didn’t reply to your post. I figured I’d just give you a call and say thanks, like always…… Jon just lives 20 minutes down the road from me for those of you who were wondering 🙂

  • I color check my project on a calibrated broadcast monitor, then check the final DVD on the same monitor using a consumer DVD player…… and I check the DVD on my home system. Each monitor was set up with NTSC bars.
I’m a real picky person when it comes to accurate calibration. I used to shoot tranparencies for catalogs and magazines.

  • I think most people assume this problem is their problem, and don’t realize it’s everybody’s problem. Now that we’ve brought light to the issue I think more people are going to griping. But, how do you get the QT guys to wake up to this fact. I’ve seen gamma issues going to and from other codecs as well. Try going from HDV to mp2, or going from DVC PRO HD to mp2. One goes dark and the other goes lighter. This really pisses me off when I shoot for optimal latitude, color correct for a particular look and then everything gets bottle-necked by Compressor or QuickTIme.

Good luck on this. I hope enough people gripe about the problem so that something gets done.

  • The one pass is what I did my testing with. But, I think it happens in two pass mode also. Not for sure though.

  • My concern with using compressor to make adjustments in color and gamma is that it’s not WYSIWYG. I built a preset using compressors color adjustments, but it took many trys and lots of guess-timation to hone in on something that was close. I would also worry that making adjustments in the color adjustment dialog might introduce additional compression artifacting and loss of saturation. To be honest, I’d rather the Manufacturer fix the problem than me. I’ll try to get it right in the edit and leave it up to them to get it right in the conversion.
    Thanks for the input,
    Danny

  • No, It means that the file I compressed to mp2 using Compressor got dark. But, the files I simply exported using Quicktime conversions (QT reference and Sorensen 3) were compressed using DVD Studio Pro. They bypassed Compressor all the way and therefore bypassed the problem.
