The canon is very hard to focus because of it’s poor LCD and even worse viewfinder. The advantage it has is a longer lens and of course it’s price. The 170 will produce a better image, though the Canon has higher resolution imager.

And it costs $1000??
I can’t believe that it is this expensive to transfer footage from P2 to a desktop.
Maybe I will do the unthinkable and buy a cheap PC laptop to do the transfers with.

Noah and John,
Thanks for the feedback. It is interesting that Sony makes a $250 SxS reader that can be used on desktops, but the Panasonic reader is $2000.

HDV should be HDV, but it isn’t. There is HDV1 (JVC 720p) and HDV2(Sony and Canon 1080i).
Your Sony deck will play 720p30 HDV out either the HDMI or Component ports but not Firewire.
You will need to have either a deck or camera for the format that it was shot in.
Make you with for the simpler days of DV huh?

You can also try capturing via Firewire and then letting FCP transcode the files to Apple ProRes on the fly.
I have done this and it works very good. You will need to have more drive space available but you will be editing in a 10 bit 4:2:2 codec. If you do some searching on the internet you can find out more info about doing this. I don’t think that I can link to other web forums here.

I have 2 edit systems that both have this issue.
I have never had problems with FCP like this before, and I have been a user since v1.0.
One system is running Leopard and the other Tiger. Any thing that is done in Motion and then inserted into a timeline causes the machine to crash when you try to render.
I took a project from the machine with Tiger and tried to render it on my Leopard machine (2.8 Quad, GeForce 8800, 6 gigs ram). Final Cut crashed with an error message saying that it may have to do with the “ProGraphics” plug in. When I looked at the crash log it pointed to the Nvidia card.
Both systems are running 7.4.1.
I can’t believe that Apple released a version of Quicktime that enabled video rentals but killed all of the people doing production!!!

Just a thought.
What if you went with a box that converted firewire to SDI? Check out the Convergent Design forum here.
That way the image stays digital instead of going to analog via component.
You could then buy a cheap HD card for your mac (i.e. Blackmagic, Aja, etc.).
Your out of pocket would be cheaper than the IO/HD.

I live in DC and have access to the F350 when ever I need it. Also there are several other shooters in this area that shoot for National Geographic, Discovery, etc.

Luke,
One question for this thread. Currently I use a Decklink HD card with an HDLink to monitor and output native HDV footage from my G5 using FCP 5.1.
Currently I am editing 1080i60 HDV footage, but I have a proejct using HDV 720p24 that I want to edit once FCP 5.1.2 comes out in a few weeks.
How will the Decklink card and HDLink work with the HDV 720p24 footage? Will it be as easy as working 1080i60 HDV is? I am sure that you have or will be testing this.
Thanks,
Dan Weber
