The file extension is .MOV. I’m assuming it is the codec that is AVin.
When I open the file in the QuickTime player, the audio will play and the inspector says the format is “AVin,” as does the “Get info” button in the Finder.

Yes I did. No luck.
I may have to contact someone I know who has Avid, but I was hoping to do it in-house.

I used a 2Ghz dual-core MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM until a few months ago when I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro with 2.5Ghz and 8GB of RAM. Not sure about the video card off the top of my head.
I do it mainly for mobility, as I freelance a lot in addition to traveling for work.

Don’t have my AE in front of me now, but shouldn’t there be a Speed control in the Slide controls? If not, you might have to tweak the the Twitch speed and amount along with the Slide amount until you like it…

I don’t know how long the shot is, but if the cigar is only in that corner of the screen, I would just rotoscope it. Shouldn’t take long at all. Like Dave said, duplicate it, keyframe a mask around the cigar, then play around with the feathering to make it look pretty.

Thanks guys, that makes perfect sense. So the solution would be to export it in a format that uses square pixels so that the client doesn’t necessarily have to have a player that interprets the metadata in order to see it correctly. Am I understanding that right?

Thanks for that. That’s what I started doing. It actually isn’t as bad as I thought, though once in a while the bars just don’t want to align. But so far, so good. Maybe I’ll post the final product when it’s done.

I agree with Antony. Twitch is a great plug-in for this type of thing. You can use it to do what you are talking about in probably 10 minutes.
It’s cheap too (less than $50 I think, and direct download) for such a powerful preset. I use it all the time for transitions, RGB splitting, jumpy text, camera shakes, etc.
If you don’t want to spend the money, mess around with different text transitions, going wild with the key frames. You can piece it together with some other effects, but it might take a while to get exactly what you are looking for since you are not too familiar with it yet.

And… problem solved. I changed the keyframe interpolation to linear and it works fine. I guess I just have to avoid easy ease keyframes with such a long animation. I’m not sure what the exact root of the problem is, but I’m fine with the solution now.

Some extra info:
Maybe the SureTarget is a factor. The reason it is happening is because the position of the null object jumps way off for random frames then returns back to normal. Not sure why it is happening…
