The G-Raid comes as raid 0 and you can’t change that so
If what you seek is protection I would choose another disk or buy two of them. It’s a good disk but having your entire project on just one disk, as good as it may, be can be dangerous. -

I have used the G-Raid for a TV series and I can say that they were great. It was 3 months of intensive use and the disks never failed.
Apple says that you can only use 8 GB but the guys at OWC makes test and confirm that you can use more.

But is it not important to have a faster hard drive?

According to what it says in Apple page Final Cut X does beneffit from having more RAM, this you have to buy it in pairs. (2 x 4gb) I would think that is even more importan for edition to have a quicker hard drive, so if I were you first I would have the 7200 rpm disk and then the RAM.
If you decide to buy more RAM don’t buy it at apple, it’s really expensive. There’s pages like Other World Computing that sell Mac RAM at better prices.It’s important that you say what kind of files do you plan on working with (or what kind of files you are using right now), that way you could get a more precise answer from the experts in the page.
About the noise I don’t know because I never have used FCX, a wild guess is that it has to do with your disk being to slow.

I did it literally almost 1200 times (download SDHC Cards with a Macbook Pro 13) with the AG AF100 being data wrangler in a TV show without using Shot Put Pro, just locking the card and checking that the structure of the card and the downloaded material was the same, not once there was a problem. I also checked the MTS files with roxio video player at first then with the Panasonic plug in.
But then again the program would save you a lot of time doing the checking for you and erasing the cards when you finish the copy (although I think is better to erase the card in the camera itself), preventing that you accidentally erase an already used folder, writing reports, autoname of folders, etc.
So like I said before if you have the money use the program if not is unlikely that you will have any problem as long as you keep yourself organize and always remember to lock the cards.
That is my experience with AG AF100 and I have also downloaded Canon 5D and 7D without using Shot Put Pro with no problems so far but maybe I just been lucky, so please check for more advise 🙂 -
I did it manually hundred of times. Just lock the card and check that the structure betwen the card and the copy you just made is the same. I mean if you don’t have the 100 usd that the program costs, if you have the money then buy it. 🙂

Just remember to lock the SD cards before you insert them into the reader.

If you want just to play the files Roxio video player is a good option.
